Need book recommendation for a beginner

Hi,

I recently had my first few surfing lessons and booked a course to learn surfing.
The lessons were a lot of practice and nearly no theory at all, so I would like to buy a good book about surfing.

It shoudn't contain stylish pictures or long chapters about surfing history and the surfing lifestyle. I would prefer a book with practical information about the actual sport.
I'm a beginner, so most advice in the book should be aimed at beginners not guys who have been surfing for years and want to learn new tricks. I really need the basic stuff e.g. what kind of boards are available, paddeling technique etc.

Can anyone recommend a good book?

I got this last year...it's ok, covers everything you mentioned. Best way to learn is to read it then go surfing the whole time! You learn more when you surf. Also search this forum....its free!

totally off topic but "woolloomoolloo" was a house i used to deliver newspapers to when i was little sputnik :lol:

Back on topic - reading is only good for theory. You are much better off getting some video's or just plain old observation that way you can visualize the whole thing.

This is an excellant book for females and males, especially young ones:

Surfer Girl - A Guide to the Surfing Life by Sanoe Lake and published by Little, Brown and Company, 2005.

Thanks for everyone who recommended a website. Unfortunately I can't read a website on the beach, same goes for the DVD.

So I think a book or a combination of a book and a DVD seems a lot better suited for me and for what I have in mind.

BTW. Woolloomoolloo is the name of a suburb near Sydney, only word I know with 8x the letter o.

3 different books:

Girl's Guide to Surfing by Andrea McCloud

Sister Surfer by Mary Osborne and Kia Afcari

Go Surf with DVD by Tim Baker

My wife has the first two, I read them both. Girl's Guide is excellent, a really good beginner's book for anyone starting to surf, highly recommend it. The Go Surf is a basic how-to book that focuses on stance and body positions, and has the DVD so you can see what they are talking about while you read the book. It's pretty good, I use it for my clients when they think they are interested in learning to surf.

Its one of my favourite place names...
Double U, double O, double L, double O, M! , double O, double L, double O!!

Sounds even funnier if you use the welsh pronunciation for the double L's :lol:

I got that one too, didnt really get much from it that I didnt already get from this site and reading the threads but if you want to read something down the beach then I guess its good.
