That's true but I'd like to think that it's more jealousy than caring what people think. Of course I also don't want to look like the total kook either. But seeing guys getting wave after wave, and getting really long rides as they easily get around sections or do floaters over them.

They take off much deeper than you and thus don't give you a chance to get a wave, they get barreled in tiny surf when you wouldn't believe that it was possible to get barreled that day. They do massive hacks in gutless surf when you have trouble just getting any speed and doing one turn.

It can get really frustrating when you are surrounded by such talent. But it's also a great motivator as you know what's possible, it's certainly driven me to taking off much deeper and later than I used to.

i started @ october last year. i've stood up less than 10 times and most of those were on my buddies longboard, not my 7'6" funfish.

my advice to u bro is this:

ive been surfin since i was 8 and ive never worried about progression the essence of surfing is fun and enjoyment not a bunch of tricks no matter how cool the are, enjoy what u do and the rest will follow

everyone singin from the same hymn sheet here... surfin just less than a year. can stand and turn.. even cut the face on my mini mal a few times. started on a funboard 7'2" recently and feel like an absolute beginner again. dedicated enough tho so should have it sussed pretty soon.
playing guitar nearly 20 years and although better than most still feel i could be better.
surfing and playing music are similar in that they are a personal journey in terms of progression you'll never be 100% satisfied you can always play a better solo or ride a better wave. i never want to feel like i've arrived.
so the only thing to do is enjoy the journey! (sorry for sounding like a complete hippy but there it is)

30+ years of nonstop learning ocean mechanics and how to place my body amidst the tempest. loving every minute and learning will never stop.

How good am I??? In my head I rip on Kelly Slater, reality......I'm above average......I think...depends on your view of average.

Hey Parry,
I kind of consider it like...
Better than most, not as good as some.

I'm usually the worst surfer in the water every time I go out. Perhaps in a few years if I stay dedicated and keep trying my best, some newbie will come along and take my throne! :P

And yet I still love it.

hey perusurf, was in Peru a few years ago... amazing country has absolutely everything... jungle, desert, mountains, waves... real culture shock. didn't surf at the time but stopped at a place called Supai Beach near Pisco by the Attacama desert. looked like a wild beach. anyone surf there? saw some surfers in Lima... not really sure about the water quality tho :spew: looked a bit suspect. supai looked like somethin special. very remote. know its not really relevant to the thread but have to know. apologies.

I managed to catch a wave on my first try (which i was chuffed with) but only get a chance each summer because of work/uni commitments and having no car ;-( but hopefully having a couple of lessons before the summer to progress from just standing on the board to actually moving down a wave. still useless though, but its great fun just trying, which is why i like it so much...

Hi man,
glad you liked it, and yes we have a lot to offer, but i have to correct you in something, atacama desert is in chile man, haha, that's ok though, never been down that way to surf, there are many virgin spots further down south, i've gone surfing a few hours away from Lima to a break called pepinos, it was awesome, no one was there, just us, perfect long left, warm water, a bitch to get to though, did you see good waves there? i ould find out i guess....
the color of the water is really greenish and sometimes kinda brownish but that's 'cuz there's a lot of placton, and that's why we have so many types of fish abundantly. but in summer time with all the people it does get a bit polluted.
anyway, i'm always happy to help out or answer any questions regarding peru and surfing there.
peace

I wish I was closer to the beach even though its 20 minute away. DAMN IT! It'll be too stressful not surfing at least one or twice per week. You should try moving sometimes xD

Hey Perusurf, there is actually a Northern region of the atacama... had me thinkin there had to look it up tho..http://www.geographia.com/peru/. thought the water was cold there because of the humboldt current? Water quality only looked dodgy in Lima.. but couldn't be worse than the irish sea. the rest of the country looked stunning. you run tours there? would love to go back for a surf trip.
