Got me some blanks let the shaping begin

May sound like a dum ass question but when shaping do you buy the blanks already pre shaped like shown in the pitchers??

for some reason i thought you would start with a rectangle block of foam and start shaping from there????

Shaping from a rectangular block of foam takes quite alot of skill and you'd also need to put in your own stringer.
Shaping from a blank is much easier but still requires a good eye. You can also have the blanks pre-shaped at some places leaving very little shaping to do which is good if you don't like making lots of mess or are not too keen on the shaping process.

I used to think the same thing until Clark foam closed and I was reading the first article about it closing when it happend and it showed a pic of a whole bunch of blanks sitting there.. "Ohhh, they are already kind of shaped."

Now that would be a process Ya as long as you arnt cock eyed you shouldnt have too much issues as for pre shaped blanks i wasnt interested in walking down that road i wanted to get expo in just about every part of shaping. anyway preshaped blanks cost more i think

I agree you should get experience in every aspect of shaping and that is why i believe that shaping on the computer is also a necessary part of a shapers ability.
I like to shape from scratch but at the same time i like to shape on the computer.

what are you using to draw out the designs on the computer. As i reccon thats a brilliant way of getting the core idea down. Rather than have to faff around on the blank cause thus far i have found that it really pays off to have the whole scenario mapped out in your head befor you even touch the foam

I use a variety of techniques.
Sometimes i'll take photos of outlines of boards that i like and the principle dimensions. Then using corel draw i'll make a template file that i can import into auto cad so that i can then plot off a full scale outline.
I also keep templates of all the boards i shape for future reference which i have also re drawn into autocad.
But i also sometimes use 2 shaping programmes to design boards, depending on the type of board im doing and who it's for. APS3000 and DAT designer 98.
But then there's always the trusty piece of wood and french curves when i want to do an original Harmergeddon.

im not seeing it either right now

as for the graphics im toying around with different colour schemes i know more or less what i want to achieve but its getting the idea on to the board. So im gonna experiment a bit on some wood first

Okay quick update still undescided on graphics so in light of indisision i descided to shape the fish.

Its almost finished just a little tail work needed and a few touch ups. The fish is out of bio foam of which im well impressed with the foam. Its ultra flexy stuff though.





wont beable to start graphics for the next couple of days as im gonna be busy working
