Board Sizes for my freaky frame.

Postby Cortex » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:31 pm

I am a little confused as to what my board size chart should be. I'm 6'4 but only 160lbs. Am I supposed to pick my boards on weight or height? Currently surfing on family's 9'3 vintage longboard. What would be the right funboard/fish for me? Finding a wetsuit was pretty hard.

That's funny.. Im in the same exact boat.. 6'4, 160lbs. I ride a 6'5 single fin right now.. had ridden a 7'2 and that worked out well..

Lookin into what I can find, but I was also unsure as to what size I should be riding..

I'm probably going to shoot for an even 7ish. Or possibly a nice 6'7 or 6'8.

It doesn't really matter about height, may be harder to pop up and that, but weight and wave type are you're main strike. its quite a big step to go from a big board to a fish, i would go for a minimal or maybe a funboard, depends on your surfing? up to you

It does, a bit. Weight is the biggy, but height does make a difference as it alters where the weight is distributed - having your head (which is a heavy thing) hanging too far forward makes life tricky. Ditto the thighs etc.

So someone tall but skinny will be looking at a slightly longer board maybe, but can get away with a bit narrower and thinner.

Oh yeah, and as sillysausage says, a fish would be a tricky transition. Stick to a funboard - around the 7ft mark will do the job.

you can first try out the board recommended by this site, just enter your weight, experience level and the type of board you like.

That's true. The evidence is that you can catch tiny waves lying flat on your board that would be impossible to ride standing.

I'm 6'2 and 70kg (not sure of the lbs conversion). I learnt on a 7'8 mini mal, and now ride a 6'6 squash tail, or a 6'0 vintage thruster.
My 6'6 is a fairly narrow board, and is about prefect for my weight.
My 6'0 is much wider and thicker and floats me better while paddling but it is much harder for me to catch waves on.

If you're stepping down, borrow a mate's board that's around the size you think you want, and see how it feels. Also, don't make the mistake of going too short, especially since you're tall!

Thanks for advice guys. I went and got a used 7'8" funshape for 300. Yeah I'm lazy. I'm quite happy with it.
