pumpin for speed

Postby robstar313 » Tue Jan 01, 2008 1:08 pm

hi a ride a 6'6 fish i get on quite well with it when the waves are of a reasonable size i can genetrate speed by turning up and down the face no prob. Its in the small stuff i cant get speed. I see guys on far shorter narrower boards milking tiny waves by bouncing or pumping. however when i try this it either seems to have no affect or it slows me down further. some people just seem to bounce up and down on their boards and others do what looks like tic tac on a skateboard iv'e tried both with little or no luck. Can someone tell me the correct technique or best technique.
cheers

I have hardly any experience, but pumping does work for me. But I dont bounce up and down. I push my front foot up and down. Im not sure if i'm doing it right.. but it seems to work. :?

if i'm thinking of the 'bouncing' you're on about, its only to stay on the wave when you hit a 'flatter' or less powerful spot, works well, but if you're pumping this isn't necessary

i seem to remember me and drowning having a bit of a debate about which was the right technique so it might be worth looking up that topic

From my experience I have found that by doing small and smooth undulations on the wave down the face has been the best way to gain momentum down the line. The most important thing is to keep your movements smooth and flowing.

On smaller waves, the key is to surf quick and light. Weaving down the face is one way generate speed. Of course this is difficult to do on really small waves where there is very little face to weave on. Turning in critical parts of the wave is another way to generate speed. By this I mean staying close to the curl (by cutting back and rebounding off the curl) or staying high on the face of the wave. A good bottom turn is a fundamental maneuver because this is one way to reach the lip to do top turns, off-the-lips, or floaters which provide bursts of speed.

Hopping is a way to make it through flat sections of the wave, but it's only worth doing this if it looks like the wave is going to re-form or it you're trying to ride as far in as possible to go in.

It's difficult to generalize and say what the "best" techinique is because this really depends on the wave and the board you're riding (different tail rockers makes a huge difference on how you approach waves).

Hope this makes sense.

the pumping is a technique to shift the weights of the board from center to the front for a faction of a sec, so the tail of the board shift up a bit and add more volume of water to the back to increase the thrust. Doesnt always apply to small waves, but can also apply for larger ones to get some more speed to do some tricks if you feel you are slowing down. If you try this technique and nothing happens it means you arent shifting the weights properly, shouldn't be any problem who knows how to skateboarding.

Don't let the groms on their tiny boards get to you. They just have a lot more experience where to get more speed out of the wave.

Pumping

Postby HBsurfer4life » Mon Jan 07, 2008 12:17 am

I surf longboards and shortboards, I have found it is partly the rider and the board. The rider needs to be light on his or her feet and be able to bounce like a spring not to mention be able to make smooth rail to rail transition. The board has alot to do with it. Was it designed to be pumped or glide. I have both types of boards and there is a huge difference. This is where your only good as your equipment.

Do both, do a little bounce while carving up and down the wave, works like a charm, but it takes tim to get the timing right.

nice one guys been out and tried a mixture uf things trying to make myself light going up the wave deffinatley helps, think it is just a matter of timing now as sometimes it works and others it doesnt feel right and dont seem to race.

Oooh pumping a wave.....

Timing, no flailing. You need to jump your body up, and bring the board up with you in a fluid motion. As you apex direct the board down and compress your body as you come down. This loads your bottom turn to spring back to the top. Rinse and repeat.

So true
When on the wave be like the wave, fluid but strong, like the water.

I try to get my speed from going up and down wave instead of "pumping". usually small wave doesn't make you seem going up and down rather than pumping, so maybe some people are getting confused by that :?:
