I was wondering if a mini malibu is a good surfboard to learn on.. Can you suggest anything else?

It's an excellent board to learn on!
Anything from about 7'6" to 7'10" depending on your weight and height.

check the beginners section for more info

i'd say that a mini mal would be one of the best boards to learn on, but if ur pretty tall and/or heavy then u might consider getting a normal malibu. mals r really buoyant and stable, almost like on a moving sidewalk, and r perfect 2 learn on coz u can catch just about any wave.
