duck diving a fat board...

Postby twizlstikz » Fri Jan 25, 2008 4:00 am

i know there are already topics about this but they havnt helped me really..... i have a 6'6" board but its very thick and wide, nearly a funboard shape... and i dunno if i should be able to duck dive it, because i know how and i tried, and when i push down with my arms instead of the board going under i just lift off the board and it says on the water.... am i doing something wrong or is my board to buoyant to duck dive? thanks for the help!

I can duck dive my 7'0" shortboard easily for 3-4 feet. But anything over that for me, require extreme precision and accuracy. It could be the boards fault for you, since its so wide and buoyant. It would help to know how big the dimension are.

Yeah you are too light to duck dive that board. You may keep trying to duck dive with it, but it'll be pretty hard since you so are small compared to the board.
I suggest you keep playing with that board until you have enough money for a smaller board or if you do have enough money you can buy a smaller one.

i can duckdive my 7'2 retro single fin its about 3 inches thick i weigh about 150. Then again all the weight of the board is up at the nose and it has a skinny tail so im assuming thats got something to do with it

Mind you my mate can duck his longboard so i think anything is possible

k thanks for the help! this is a new board, i love the buoyancy for paddling/catching waves so its worth not being able to duck dive it haha...

Go for a turtel roll, it is much more effective if you time it right. (you should bne underwater JUST before the wave hits you)

f the turtle roll....
I duck dive my 10'0 log in overhead waves.....timing and positioning.
plus i weigh 230lbs.

None the less if you use your momentum and scoot forward a bit you should be able to duck any board. As you scoot the board tip will begin to go under just then do a push up with one leg up in the air. Rock your weight side to side a little as you submerge, this will help scoop more water

if nothing else practice.

even if you don't turtel roll, I can duck my 7'3" minimal, although I weigh 80kg, I geuss if nothing else it will be good duckdiving practise and while you save up and wait for a board to be shaped it will make yoube able to duck anything if you can duck 7ft with that, if I look at your weight I will say get a 5'8" to 6'2".
But whatever you do either turtel roll or duckdive, it sucks when someone trows a board in your face because a overhead swell is going to break ontop of them, then when you duckdive it you get a greeting with mister fin, nobody wants to be called scarface.

Yeah, keep practicing until you can get a shorter board.

I learned to duck dive a 7'2 board (Im 6'4.. 165lbs) and then when I went down to the 6'5 Im riding now.. thing feels like a toothpick. I go to duckdive the wave and practically plummet myself into the floor. Makes duckdiving feel WAY easier. it's hard in the beginning, but it will pay off for you. Keep trying.

Put your weight way forward on the board..

Nice, that's in my range. I guess I should be able to do it too then, amazing. I have tried many times, but my board just won't go down. If I put my full weight on the nose, eventually it will sink 25 cm and the rest of my board and body will just stay above water. Getting the full smack of the water...

I think I am the lamest duck diver at this beach, I imagine people are laughing their heads off every time I try...

you need to push the nose down then drop you're body towards the board if it keeps slapping you in the face

Hey Thibb,
Proper duck diving is an art, you can't learn it unless you keep practicing it. You will reach nirvana eventually.
