Your learning curve is definetly gonna be harder when you start on a shortboard. But never give up! Me learned on shortboard too!

And, seriously, a shortboard has definite disadvantages for a learner, unless you have very good balance. Try to hire a mid-sized funboard a few times to get the feel.

i say longboards, funboard still lack the paddling power and the pop up space... you can still do shortboard pop up techniques with a longboard, and easier to catch waves = more speed when pop up = more balance

Go to a shop, and trade in the board, and get yourself something like a 8ft+ minimal (not a full malibu, you'll need to get a new board in less than 6 months, and you will not be able to do a good bottom turn, just get a biggish minimal) Remember to get an secound hand\ board, unless you've got money, but I'll still go for an secound hand, you won't feel the difference.
You should first learn to paddle into 2 foot whitewater and stand up, then catch it JUST before it breaks and surf whitewater, then surf the face, once you can turn towards the face (if your smaller sized beachbreak sucks, you might not be able to get on the face no matter what, unless you have a 12 foot malibu, and then it still won't last) you can move on to more predictable surf, if you have a really deep point/reef, like 6 feet deep for the most part (preferably point, a reef can get really jagged, don't go anywhere famouse for pain, the point/reef must be safish) go to it and surf there, you can get much less surprized, but sit outside for a while (like a a few days) so that you start to understand the place, whatch out for rip tides, they can be your best frend or worst enemy, check where people get in and out, then choose a day when it is the mellowest EVER, the tipe when a useualle crowded place has only 2 or three people inside, then go in.
