starting to get massive withdraw symptoms now, only had one mate who surfed so used to surf with him but he quit cos he is a lazy ass, so i havent been out for like 4-5 months as i dont like going on my own as i feel such a loaner! anyone else been stranded as a loan surfer? seriously not good, ive had to watch the endless summer and big wednesday about 4,000 times since... im just missing the cuts and bruise you get,but cant think how you did them and the occasional stomach bug from the s*h*i*t water! might just give up my alevles and apply for a visa to aus!

i know exactly how you feel, as i have trouble finding people to surf with to - all of my friends just dont understand, they think i am nuts to want to jump into icy cold water wearing a rubber suit only to be pumbled by waves - all for fun. if only the knew better  sometimes i can convince my boyfriend (who doesn't surf) to come along and watch from the beach - other times, i just go out when i can see that there are other people on the beach surfing not to far away. i definately dont try and push up on people that are already there or anything, but it is definately nice to know there are some others nearby. its not the same being out there by yourself. i definately like the encouragement and company of having someone else out there with me, but dont get discouraged - you can go out there by yourself to. just make sure it is not a completely empty beach, so that if something were to happen there would be others there. also tell a friend/family where you are going for the day or something. i became buddies with the owner of a local surf shop, before i go out i stop by and chat with him for a while - so he knows what beach i am at and all.

yeah i should get out really it is the best sport in the world!! yeah i probably do feel safer when im with someone else, how many surfers die each year from drowning? i dont reckon that many really, i do find it fun when your with someone cos you can like show of to each other and learn different stuff, but being out on your own is good too as its just away from everything and then i find when you get out you get the most massive surf stoke but i think i do prefer it with someone else, plus when you got a hang over and are trying to paddle out it makes it actually fun with someone else watching them get bashed around too!

Yeah, I've only ever surfed on my own, unless you count the odd time I've met people in the water and hooked up with them for a bit. It's the best thing to get away from everything and just truly chill. I wouldn't really have it any other way. It was the same when I learnt to surf, I did it all on my own, I was pretty apprehensive about it at first but was well chuffed after my first time in the water and just kept going whenever I could.

I reckon it's all down to your personality though. If you're pretty independent and used to doing stuff on your own and happy in your own company you're not gonna have a problem going out to surf on your own. I'm sure it's different for people who are more dependent on someone else's company, you're gonna prefer to have someone around but even if you go out every once in a while on your own you'll enjoy it....guaranteed.

And as Phil said you're bound to get chatting to people out there and hook up with them in the future. Don't hesitate, grab your board and go!
