Waikiki and Rocky

Postby ValleyBall1 » Mon Oct 25, 2004 5:58 pm

Hey NY - I learned in Waikiki and then got bold and tried Rocky when it was small. Needless to say I got ROCKED @ Rocky - haha!

I don't have a board yet but am thinking of getting one soon as well. Are you going for a long or a shorty? Do you snowboard? Isn't the water super cold in NY?

Talk soon NY :D

hey cali! i'm guessing i shoulg get a shorter long board because i hear they are easier to learn on...but i'm only 5'2" so i'm worried about it being too long....i really wanted to get a shorty. have you ever seen the beginnger boards?? they are kind of like foam and so they are more buoyant and easier to learn on?
i've tried snowboarding but i was on my butt most of the time....but i liked it alot. yes the water here is freezing right now....the die hards surfers with the right equiptment are out there...but not me :( i'm sooo jealous that you get to surf basically all year round!!!!!

Which board?

Postby ValleyBall1 » Tue Oct 26, 2004 2:29 am

Hey NY - I learned on a SoftTops board which is the 1st board listed here: https://surfing-waves.com/beginner_surfboard.htm . I found it a lot easier to stand up than I thought (I was able to ride a 1-2 all the way in on my first wave). It was extremely hard to turn though so I was just stoked drilling straight down the wave. My friends say carving, especially on a long board, will take some time to learn / master. I'm thinking I want a Mini-Mal and found a lot of good information here: https://surfing-waves.com/beginner_surfboard1.htm .

Man, I feel for you about the water. I can't handle the cold that well so even for Winter Cali surfing, I think I'm going to run a wetsuit.

I lived in Denver for 2 years and lived at the Vail Resorts. I think I'm going to get back into boarding this Winter (Mammoth and Tahoe). What resorts are by you?

i've only actually been surfing bout a year now, so my travels are pretty much ma, nh, ri - close by to boston. as i get better though i would def be interested in a trip to jersey or long island.

there are quite a few surfers round here in ma, all of them are very territorial though, guess it goes along with there not being many waves, etc. in my opinion, the ocean is big enough for all of us, lets just have fun. for me its never about being the best or looking the coolest, i just wanna have a good time :-) cheers to the many good times to come!!

Local boys

Postby ValleyBall1 » Tue Oct 26, 2004 7:21 pm

Yah, not sure what's up with the territorial thing. I heard HB (in Cali) is like that too but have never paddled out to see. They say North Shore is like that as well but I think if you respect them, talk to them, ask for their opinions, etc. they'll help you out and let you know when it's "safe" out. Maybe it's the aloha spirit or something, not sure. A couple local boys helped me at Rocky last week when it was small(er) so that was pretty cool.

I'm with you, though, on the good times. Just get out there and enjoy the ride :D

Feelin' your pain guys! i'm from melb aust.. i have just learnt to surf myself ( in surfers paradise QLD) and am terrified of going out by mself down here not only cause of the great whites down here but fear of complete and utter humiliation with the locals... the main places to surf is Torque (bells beach) got to find some nice little breaks first i rekon! Any ideas on where to find some buddies?

If you guys make it down to Jersey, give a shout. You've got some good breaks up on Long Island, though. Enjoy 'em!

ya surfers up in LA and surrounding areas can be very teritorial (i could tell you some highly amusing stories about incidents) i expect its the same wherever you surf near a big city
