The WEDGE at newport?

i want to go somewhere in southern california for big waves.. just for the heck of it.. but i hear the wedge is only for body boarders? and i was wondering if it is always so crowded

The wedge is mutant alley. Thats one crazy ass shorebreak when its firing. Wouldnt personaly take my surfboard there though.

Theres quite a few spots that get a crowd when its big im not sure about the rest of socal but here in san diego a few breaks come to life on a swell.

blacks, swamis, big rock, the cliffs - just to name a few

Best thing to do when hunting for big waves is to know which breaks are gonna get the brunt of the swell

seen some people surfing the wedge in huge waves on surfboards, if your Kelly Slater etc, but looked pretty dangerous to me, i know i wouldn't be going in there

You can surf the wedge but it is not condusive to surfing. Many times you are looking at nothing but the ground underneath you. Isaluteyou gave you a couple other places that go off on a swell. I would sugest trying them out first.
