your wife is good but does she paint any fiction? my thing is if its a real scene id rather just see it for myself. which is why photography isnt really an art unless you use it in a way to manipulate the subject or become fiction. i see a lot of paintings in hawaii like these that are really tehnically talented, but lack creativity. the ones that really strike me are when someone has the skill and plays with your imagination, memories, etc. i have a freind who makes paintings of ambiguous but cute characters and uses color to emphisize their cuteness but then has them doing something dememted that reflects society in some way like mass media or religion, and has 100's of these like 1 inch characters on 5 or more huge canvas'. to me thats more interesting because it makes me look more and wonder what the fleshin' is going on

anoher thing that bugs me is the straight forward in your face political approach to art. for art to be art i think it has to reflect something within the viewer and that stuff is just like someone holding a sign in your face that says impeach bush or something.

....image manipulation is not a type of photography, it's called photo editing :!:

i think you have a different understanding of what art actually is :!:

duuhhh, image manipulation is photography. when i was in photo classes i spent more time in the dark room than i did out shooting pictures. but i didnt even say that did i? i said manipulate the subject, which means that rather than a picture of just a flower, georgia okeefe made photographs that were sexual and represented body parts. unlike the paintings above, which just look nice. most of my photographs were just pretty, nice technique and good composition and use of negative and positive spce, i hardly accomplished something with more meaning, but that was the goal. can you understand that? what is art to you, if it looks pretty? if it looks pretty, i go "ooo" then walk away. end of story. when it fleshin' with my subconscious i come back, or if i dont understand it i stay there and stare, like picasso or pollack or dali. so what is art to you anyway?

Photography is everything from representing a schene, a moment in time, to art. And part of that is manipulating the image (be it in a dark room or in photoshop). Somewhere along that process, after a lot of manipulation, it (IMO) stops becoming a photograph and starts becoming something else - more work than just levels/sharpening etc.

As for what my wife pains, some are very realistic representations, some are altered, she paints what she wants. She's done and is planning more 'creative' works but they take more time to work through.

i just dont think its art if the photograph is just taken to show a scene and no thought is put into it. or like postcards. they take a lot of technical skill, but id still rather just see it for myself. thats what causes it to not be art. i think snap shot portraits are art though. or if it captures a real moment, not just a sunny day on the beach.
