Hi all, almost 2 years ago I fell on a largish wave and broke the costal cartilage that connects the lower ribs to the sternum. The costal cartilage is around 10cm long & is still considered a ‘rib’ but is obviously cartilage not bone; unlike bone however it doesn’t knit on its own for a number of reasons. The broken ends grind together when I paddle, causing significant pain. Cardio thoracic surgeon doesn’t want operate as prognosis for broken ends joining is poor (will only operate if lung starts herniating). Although uncommon, this injury occurs from time to time in car accidents, MMA etc. Just wondering if anyone out there has experienced this injury, and whether they’ve had surgery/ treatment & outcomes. I’m using padded vest & inflatable vests which help a bit.... thanks in advance!
