Postby zandvoortsurfertje » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:35 am

ASP Women's Junio Qualifying Events took place on the 17th and 18th of April 2012
The name of the tournament was: Breti Girls Pro Junior.
It was a nice competition in stormy 2-3ft waves on the secondary venue of Les Dunes in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, the surfers had to compete in ice-cold water which they weren't used to after a long winter break at sunny destinations.

Report:
With conditions crappy and low waves (but still better than what we have got in the Netherlands) the competition started. Most of the surfers come from warm countries and are used to warm water so many of them had first of all get used to the cold water.
Bianca Buitendag just 17 years old, was the surfer who could surf the best in these (crappy) conditions, she scored both the highest single-wave of the event and the best heat-total, an impressive 15.90 out of 20. “To be honest this is probably some of the worst conditions I’ve surfed in my life this morning when we got here.” Buitendag said, but as she came first she made the best of it, with smooth bottom turns and small cutbacks. Then second place came Johanne Defay (FRA) 18, the 2011 ASP Europe Junior Women’s Champion and World Junior Title runner-up. She also tried to make the best of it, she had some nice waves but also some late take-offs and it wasn't as smooth as the surfing of Bianca but couldn't match the South-African in her wave selection. Maud Le Car (FRA) 19, ended up taking the third spot in the final today, although she came in 2nd overall last year she couldn't find the perfect waves and couldn't match up with the level of Bianca. Although she was training a lot the whole winter in Barbados and Australia. But she was very strong after such a long winter break Coming off strong after a long winter break in the Caribbean and a first win in a local event in South-West France, Maud didn’t manage to confirm her great form today. Josephine Costes (FRA) 16, was the youngest competitor in today’s final of the Bréti Girls Pro Junior and she ended up 4th, so we have to watch her in the future as upcoming talent! The Hossegor resident had to face unusal conditions and fought hard to qualify through three heats before surfing the final heat of the day.

Thanks for doing this report. My only criticism is that it's almost identical to the ASP release (I'm on the mailing list). What I'd love to see is a re-write in your own words, your own take on the competitions.

That said, thanks for posting this up, it is appreciated. I hope to see more from you ZVS
