Starting a Surf Club

any of you got tips on starting a surf club. I'm from Hewlett, NY and me, my friends, and a teacher are trying to start a surf club.

sponsorship is always a good place to start (our uni surf club is sponsored by the local surf shop) and make it as appealing as poss to members! free stuff/surf trips/lessons/comps etc

our problem isnt having not enough ppl its just having too many posers (i'm from a neighborhood where everyone wears hollister type xxxxx)

IMO decide what you want the surf club to do. if it doesnt do anything why have one?

Organise surf trips? Discuss issues (breaks/sewage etc) , teaching (for free?), comps?

If there isnt an organisation similar in the area then start by trying to get some locals together for a chat, suggest some stuff, see if they have any ideas etc.

Sponsorship is a great idea, free stuff, prizes for comps etc.

Have you looked for existing clubs? There are usually around in most places with a decent population. Also, look up your local Surfrider chapter, and possibly they do the same thing you are trying to do, or you could work as a supplement of them. You'll definately find some core surfers if they are members of surfrider.

Organize little surf meets/trips with the ones that surf.

As for the posers, let them work fundraisers and clean-ups.

And everyone can get together to watch movies or throw parties.

do you mean a surf club for beginners, or intermediates and pros. if its for all, then you could get some competitions going, as others have said, maybe have a yearly fee, and then have no extra cost for teaching and go on cheapish surf trips?

Good ideas thanks. Were going ot talk to the principal of my school. were going to add in commnity by cleaning up the beaches.
