The Truth about Rash vests

Postby Laguna » Thu Jul 06, 2006 9:52 pm

Im not sure if its just me but everytime I wear my rashvest underneath my wetsuit , it really makes my neck bad and gives me a bad rash pain. Im starting to think they are called rash vests for another simpler reason now.

Anyone else get damn burning pains from their rash vests?

Is there a label in the neckline? They always bug the fleshin' outta my skin so I cut them off. Might be worth giving that a shot if there is a tag there

Actually I ifnd they STOP rashes (hence the aussie colloquial "rashie").

But Jen is spot on - that only works if you make sure nothing irritating is inside them. And the damned things DO come with labels. Immediate surgical removal with stitch picker/razor blade/carpet knife/whatever on purchase!

It might sound stupid but make sure that the vest is not inside out. If you have a plain vest you might be wearing it inside out. It should be helping you against rashes

yes...someone else has this problem!

Around my neck, and the back of my arms get light rashes. A guy in australia helped solve this a few years back... Basically (yes this will sound stupid!) you need to melt a bar of soap with water in the microwave..then pour a little bit around the irritating neck area.

It will harden and stop it all together.

Note: It eventually wears off but that's ok, the problem wn't come back!

I get a sore neck whether I wear a rash vest or my wetsuit where it rubs, I find a good coating of vaseline round my neck helps it quite alot :D

Thanks fir the help, oh and the rashvest isn't inside out lol. I think Jen might be right about the label, I'll try cutting it off and see if it happens later on.

What I hate about rashies is how they ride all the way up to your nipples underneath your wetsuit and stay there all session. :?

Might be a poorly constructed wetsuit that's at the root of your trouble.

My 3/2 is like that; damned stitching right on the neck!
My rashie reduces the rash extremely, but it hasn't eliminated the problem all together.

My 5/4 on the other hand has no stitching on the neck => so, no rash problems there.

Good point, it could also be that. I did think of that because im now using my 3/2 O'Neil Epic 2 which is fine and al , except at the neck its rubbery and would feel irritating if I had no rash vest on

Im pretty sure now that its just the summer wetsuit im using. The rubber material at the neck gives me a bad rash.
Today I was using my 5mm winter suit and didnt bother with a rashvest and I was fine. I forgot just how much difference it makes when paddling with a 5mm suit on and boots.

I've only heard of this happening when a wet suit makes contact with the skin on the neck.

If you are wearing a half-decent brand rashie (even most of the cheapies are half decent), have removed the tags and pulled the neck out of you wettie I can't figure out where you could have gone wrong.

Vaseline should help too. Make sure the rash guard covers your neck well tho.

:(

Sorry I'm not more help on this one.

I think part of my problem with my 3/2 is that it is a little big for me, so the neck probably isn't as tight as it should be. This probably causes extra rubbing through the rash guard, so I still get a little irritation.
