vintage Lonnie Buhn board, brittle needs a recoat

Postby MrLeo » Sat Jul 16, 2022 5:07 pm

Picked up from ebay. Was going to fix a few dings with epoxy Suncure. But quite a few areas (under & side) the surface cracks under my fingernail. Can I fix with an epoxy hotcoat?

I think it's probably been left in the sun? the waxed top seems fine and solid, but the underneath all feels rather brittle and delicate, I dont think it's delamination more like the top coat has dried out and lost it's strength, if I press it with a thumb it's ok, but if I dig in with a nail it sort of crunches and leaves the scratch/indent.

I am wondering if I fill the holes/dings, then do a light sand and then do an epoxy clear 'hot coat' on the entire underside, if that would fix it?

I can only find posts about delamination and dings, nothing on brittle/old delicate surface.

Seems a lovely board, I also cycled 20 miles with it under my arm and keen to use it.

That should seal it but does nothing to strengthen the area which will remain prone to be easily damaged. If the glass is broken under the resin then the strength of that area is compromised. Without fiberglass resin is relatively much more fragile.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The reason is no one/repair guy wants to take on that task. It is just not worth it. If that board is "Vintage", meaning over 25 years old, and the glass is brittle, the inner foam blank is probably going bad too. Is the stringer popping up from the deck ?

If it truly is a collectible, then you can look up Randy Rarick and what he does to restore boards in that condition.

The stringer looks fine. The board looked OK apart from the small dings. Was only when preparing the dings that I realised the underside was brittle in places.
The top is solid. Seems underneath the fibreglass layer is really thin, perhaps was made for maximum lightweight.
Thanks for the suggestion, I looked him up and have been on a youtube journey of watching restoration videos.
I'm now thinking it could be rescued by filling the dings, sanding and then laying down a 4oz fibreglass cloth with appropriate resin, then filling the steps to sand and hot coat.
