Neck issues from surfing

Postby LtColFrankSlade » Wed Dec 16, 2020 8:44 pm

Hi all,

I’m pretty new to surfing 3-4 months. I have had a few injuries unfortunately. Currently, I think I have a pinched nerve in my neck. It has been a week and it’s better, but still sore. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to manage this? Or when to get back on the board?

I have a 3 week holiday coming up and was hoping to surf most days!

Thanks!

Nice Avatar, welcome thesanely crazy world of surfing, that’s compared to the rest of the world.
have good news and bad news, neck issues from surfing in the early days can range from serious to just annoying
The annoying end is the position of paddling with head up does indeed cause neck strain and rotation in the neck up position really cranks it up.
Your age and relative flexibility will play a part here!
If you believe you have a pinched nerve ( possible symptoms, tingling down arm , loss of power and movement) get it checked out ASAP by a Chiropractor or a medico, preferably one who surfs, there is remedial work that can be done
A serious newbie neck injury with quite big consequences is where the neck positioning compromises a vertebral blood vessel and causes a type of stroke like injury in the spinal, cord ( rare but there)

most common case is simply new sets of muscle work hurting .
As a retired Chiropractor but still surfing, ! Get it checked out, prolonged doing it , can just make it worse, you can then go to the right exercises to support your surfing
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷
