5'3" Formula Fun review

Postby waikikikichan » Tue Jul 28, 2020 9:11 am

So after not surfing since March back in Hawaii, I got my first surf on a Formula Fun 5'3" Twin Fin Fish.

My thoughts:
Pros:
Board floats very well. ( remember I usually ride a 9'0" )
Duck dives easily.
Nice "Beak/Eagle" nose up front to hold onto.
Real Futures Fins boxes and "T-1" twin fins.
No wax deck pad.

Cons:
Leash plug is on the wrong side for me.
Visible and "feel"able molded edge line around the rail of the board.
Not sure if you can put a traction pad with arch and kick onto the deck pad.
Deck pad holds water, so remember to let it drain out before putting it into a bag or sock.

I only got to try it out on on-shore crappy shore break and I was super rusty for not surfing for 3 months. But it did okay. I'm was thinking the board "tracked" too much with the provided T-1 fins ( 512 area ? ) So for the next trial I put in some 450 fins, seemed a bit better. Will update after I try it in better conditions.

My 2nd wave on the board.

Is that a soft board or foamie?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

It's a "soft" board but not really a sponge board. It's made from Marko foam. Kind of more rubberized foam. There's a textured pattern on skin.

Suppose to be "The first fully recyclable foam surfboard on the market".

What is the weight like in comparison to a 'hard' board? It looks interesting. Seems like a step up from the wavestorms and I looked online and it wasnt that expensive (US275 vs the wavestorm at about US170), so could be a good fun option. If I was smaller and lighter and a better surfer, of course.

I definitely agree that it's a step up from a Wavestorm. If the Formula Fun is too small, Almond brand boards have the "R-series" that uses the Marko foam too.

They make a 5'4", 6'4" and a 8'0" ( but they're way more expensive than Formula )

So are you using the board for the safety of others at the crowded beaches in Japan? For your own safety? Some other reason?

More because we got use of a Mini Cooper, but a longboard won't fit inside and we're not allowed to put roof racks on it.
