Kneeboards, Bill and George!

Postby jaffa1949 » Fri Jan 24, 2020 4:10 pm

Quite a few of the forumites have formed meet and greet friendships even across our widespread oceanic realms.
Billy Morini has met lots of others from the forum and shows good Californian hospitality to all.

Billy went window and surf shopping at Surf n Wear Beach house.

His niece graduating high school, prompted the search for a cool, gift!
The sticker display case caught his eye and Jaffa thoughts jumped to the fore.
What was the trigger? A cool blue Velo aeroplane George Greenough Sticker, the plane is sometHing lI ke the Blue Meanies out of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie!

This was exceedingly apt for me as I have met and discussed much about surf design ( notice I don’t specify type of surf craft) with George so my current quiver pivots around kneeboards and surf mats.
My health recovery and rugby damaged knees means these are the mainstay of my quiver now.

Speaking of Beatles John Lennon when he formed the Plastic Ono Band wrote a song with the line “ one thing you can’t hide, is when you are crippled inside”

In Aussie bestest slang Kneeboarders are known as Cripples, since they are the living ancestors of shortboard surfing , with Greenough and California’s Steve Liz influencing much of what Surfing does now, riding deeper and deeper into the tube.

These thoughts brought two slogans, “ Being on your knees is not submission” and a paraphrased bit of Lennon “One thing you can’t hide is when a cripple ‘s inside”

So to save a thousand words, a picture, featuring the Velo sticker, meanie blue and. my adaptive Sunova Torpedo board, .
A short aside the Sunova brand is designed by Bert Burger, .........l he was one of the group that started FireWire type boards.
.

So picture now

The blue sticker is the George Greenough
Recommended Greenough viewing,
Outermost Limits of Pure Fun and Crystal Voyager 1973, the latter had the first major tube sequence , decades before GoPro
The camera was huge and heavy and the footage inspired Pink Floyd to release “Echos” as a sound sequence for this.

To get an idea of the size of the camera, google Big Wednesday, and look at the production shots.

You can find the sequence in the film is called Comes the Dawn.on YouTube, watch it ............ and cast your mind back imagine sitting in front of a full, screen movie, nothing like this had never been seen and the hit the sound track.
It was enough to make world wide audience go home and saw 18 inches or more off their boards!
