I store my boards under my bed (and my kids beds...), if that is an option. Anything under 7-7.5ft should be fine
Otherwise laying a board on its rail or upright on its tail (unless it’s a swallow tail) won’t damage it. Good protection underneath where it touches the ground - old carpet or carpet underlay is great, a cheap foam camping mat/yoga mat or a few layers of cardboard.
The main risks are it falling over or someone slamming something against it
For the former (less of a risk if it’s on rail)- see if you can rig up a rope or string to tie it to the wall somehow (you can get Velcro wall hooks or small screw in or many other options). Doesn’t have to be ultra secure, just something to stop accidents. And a small rest for the bottom of the board to stop it sliding (a brick is good ie put the brick on the ground up against the rail )
For the latter - slide some of that foam or cardboard into the board bag as extra protection, or some folded up towels or wads of bubble wrap or your wetsuit, or all of them - whatever you have.
It should be fine - at worst you have some small dings or shatters to repair and that’s easy.
