Best job in the world? Retired surfing legend Mick Fanning signs epic 10-year deal that will see him get paid to travel the globe hunting secret waves
Mick Fanning will spend the next 10 years hunting the perfect wave for Ripcurl
The world champion surfer has signed a multi-million dollar deal after retiring
He will travel to remote and inhospitable places to find new surfing experiences
Surfing legend Mick Fanning will spend his retirement seeking out the most perfect waves in the world thanks to an extraordinary new deal.
The world champion has signed a 10-year agreement worth millions of dollars to be the face of Rip Curl's The Search, a new adventure that will see him surf in some of the most remote parts of the world.
The surfwear company has already sent him to ride a secret break known as 'the snake', which is thought to be a perfect wave, and surf swells made by glaciers.
Fanning says he is excited for the new opportunity, which will see him continue his close relationship with the surfing brand, which has been his major sponsor for decades.
Having the relationship I have had with the company and the people in it has been a huge part of my career and the last 20 years of my life,' he said.
'This deal is another cornerstone in that relationship, and I can’t wait to get out there and get on The Search.'
Fanning will also work on his own softboard business, as well as Balter Breweries, which he founded with other pro-surfers Bede Durbidge, Josh Kerr and Joel Parkinson.
The 37-year-old announced his retirement last February, telling fans in a social media post he could no longer 'find the motivation and dedication' to continue competing.
He said he would remain an avid fan of the sport, and was looking forward to seeing it from a new angle and finding new ways to experience the swell.
'I can’t wait to watch it all go down as one of the sport’s biggest fans,' he said in the heartfelt post.
'I’m also looking forward to evolving my own surfing in new ways, visiting unfamiliar places and taking on different experiences.'
Fanning won world surfing titles in 2007, 2009 and 2013.
In 2015, Fanning punched a shark, thought to be a great white, in the nose on live television.
The predator had swum up behind him and pulled him off his board by his leg strap at Jeffries Bay in South Africa.
