Norcal Spring Break Forecast Looking Good

Postby RinkyDink » Sun Apr 02, 2017 6:31 am

SHORT TERM FORECAST (through Tuesday, April 4th)

Swell/Surf: A new/large, long period WNW swell (280-295°) will steadily build into the coast tonight through Sunday (peaked on Papa Buoy with 15 feet at 17 seconds from 270°). Taking roughly about 1.5 days to reach Central CA (note: expect a bit more energy to decay), this swell will top out first for northernmost areas like Santa Cruz/Monterey through Sunday afternoon, with SLO County peaking shortly after in the evening.

Overhead to well overhead surf will rise up on Sunday for the better West-NW exposures, with standouts climbing into the double to triple overhead+ range as the swell peaks for each respected region. Big-wave spots will produce sets running 16-20 feet on the face, and occasionally even larger for select magnets. This energy will then gradually back down over the first half of next week, but still quite large on Monday.

You are right! Today, it's 4-6 feet where I surf but I sadly I'm doing chores to keep the missus happy and stoke the "permission meter" for my next trip.

Last Friday I rode on a choppy day which forced me to crouch on every ride to keep from being bucked off. On one wave, I slid back to turn my board around for a takeoff and a gust blew it back on top of me. The silver lining was the wind also kept the paddle board fleet on the beach!

Yay for wind!
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

You missed a good one. Through the horde of SUP riders I actually managed to get about 5 good rides. One ride was so long that I actually rested once on my paddle back to the peak. I also took my first steps toward hanging ten today and discovered that I can't cross step to save my life. I'm still getting used to the longboard thing. Anyway, it looks like most of the week should be good so I'm sure you'll get some too.

Today's 2Mile Surf Report

MADNESS on the rise this morning as streets are already packed full and fender benders have already occurred and will again. Keep your eyes peeled and watch where you step, cars dodging and willing to get the spot whether you're there or not. Tides lining up today, as the prime has already passed for the early hours and will not return for a few more. Swell doing A okay and everybody seems to know it.

CHANNEL: None choose, only to escape the crowd that keeps growing.

PATCH: 40+ people ranging from the boat ramp to the rocks and counting. Pounds of people headed that way still to be a part of the jungle. Knee-Thigh high but consistent. Once again the word of the day is MADNESS.

A thought I had in the water today:
When will you know that surfing has become extinct? The day SUP riders join the lineup at Pipeline.

Another thought I had out there . . .
Those who can't surf, body surf. Those who can't body surf, SUP. <--I feel like I'm insulting the body surfers out there with this one. Still trying to reconfigure it.

I'm surprised SUPs haven't become regular apart of the lineup at Pipeline but I know they go out there, perhaps on really big days they will predominate because the regular paddlers will be at a disadvantage then. I have seen much footage of SUPs at Teahupoo due to Laird and his crew. Here is some footage of SUPs at PIpeline

Huh? Those don't look like the SUPers at my beach at all. :D

RinkyDink, what longboard did you end up getting? A noserider, all rounder, how you like it?

By the way, I'm just kidding around about SUP riders. To each their own. I'm seeing a lot of surfers who are also SUP riding. I guess if you feel like having a chill day without the hassle of the lineup, then that's one way to do it.
