Surf Sunglasses/goggles

Postby RinkyDink » Wed Feb 15, 2017 7:30 am

Due to some problems in my left eye, it's become clear that I need to start protecting my eyes (physical protection as well as UV ray protection), my right eye in particular. Does anybody have a recommendation on surfing sunglasses/goggles? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Rinky! Here is an Australian company that makes pretty good surf wear goggles/ sunglasses, have look for yourself, Barzoptics.com they have international dealer ships and they discuss fully pros and cons including about polarizing!

I use an earlier model and have been very happy with them for years :D

I have a pair of SeaSpecs....do the job and my eyes feel good esp. after a later in the day westside session. I don't like to use them because I don't like accessories, but sometimes my eyes are sore and the sun is bright so I pull them out of the surf box in the back of the car where they live. They have a strap that keeps them in place and the lenses are fixed well enough so that when you punch through a wave the lenses don't pop out (like they do when I tried using drugstore sunglasses with a strap - not a construction issue I would have considered until I popped out the lenses of three pair of cheap sunglasses).

https://www.seaspecs.com

They do prescriptions too. Got mine off amazon with no prescription, just the standard glasses and they were USD 28 two years ago....just saw they are up to 32 bucks.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll check them both out. I'm also considering these.

I wear contacts when I surf now, but I'm wondering if it is worth it to get prescription surf goggles.

I use SeaSpecs on smaller sunny days, cheap (from Amazon) and OK. They get foggy and need to be dipped in the water frequently, but I think there is something you have to put on the lens for that.

Spit....then rub till they squeak like a dive mask. You can buy anti fogging stuff in a dive store but it doesn't work any better.

I have goggles but rarely use them because I hate looking through water beads on the lens. The product below is not an anti fogger and claims to water proof lenses. Has anyone tried something like it?

Oakley Nanoclear Hydrophobic treatment
Simply use the pen applicator to cover the surface of a clean lens, wait 30 seconds before buffing out the excess with the included Microclair™ cloth, and now your glasses are protected with an oil-, lotion-, and water-resistant barrier for clarity that lasts.

I can understand while surfing our eyes do get affected because of water hitting our eyes. Recently I got myself plastic sunglasses as my father recommended me, after surfing my eyes use to get red and he was worried if they get infected. So he asked me to read online about the plastic glasses and taking his advice I did check for them. I checked for the advantages and going out that due to its full coverage my eyes will be protected and water will not hurt my eyes. I got myself plastic sunglasses.

I'm still trying to make up my mind on sunglasses. One of the things I really want to do while I'm surfing is to open my eyes under water (particularly for duck diving, but also because I just want to see things underwater). I have to wear contacts so I'm blind underwater at the moment. For that reason I'm leaning toward finding some kind of goggle. The only thing I'm hesitating on is whether the fogging problem will be such annoyance that I'll end up having to switch to sunglasses in the end.

Is Lasik eye surgery a option ? BeforeI had to wear contacts and couldn't open my eyes underwater. Now I can see better and duckdive. ( plus i don't get that "forgot to take the contacts out fell asleep stuck to your eyeball" problem )

I don't think my eyes are suitable for Lasik, but even if they were I would probably not do it. Even though I'm sure the procedure has a great success rate according to some measures, I'm not willing to take any risks with my eyes. That's just how I roll.

Was out a few weeks ago and it was dead still glassy conditions but overcast. Even I with my 'perfect' vision could barely tell the difference between the waves (grey reflecting the clouds) and the sky/clouds. There was a guy out with me who started saying he usually wore glasses and literally could not see the waves. After about 10 minutes I think he was totally spooked and just paddled in, which I can understand.

I know that Lasik has been great for lots of people, but I would advise those who are considering it to weigh the risks. If you read some of the message boards and forums for people who have complications from the procedure, the complications can be truly awful. You could go from the annoyance of wearing glasses to the daily management of severe pain, not to mention the loss of acuity in certain aspects of your vision. I also don't trust medical procedures that are basically unregulated. In the US we live in an unregulated world where there are no protections for consumers. If Lasik goes wrong for you, you're pretty much on your own in terms of having to deal with it. The following articles are old and the safety of the procedure may have improved, but I would still recommend digging into the risks if you're considering Lasik.

Same here. I considered it but shy away from the risks. A friend of mine is an eye surgeon and owns a clinic that does dozens per today. He himself, his doctors and most his colleagues don't do Lasik to themselves even if their eyes are suited to it - they wear glasses. Something to think about.

Yeah, I've read stories from people on forums who noticed that their surgeon was wearing glasses (I read those forums because I considered Lasik at one point). The other worry I had was about the long term effects of the surgery. I just figured my eyes would change over time and I didn't understand how the flaps made to my cornea would adjust to whatever changes to my eyes might occur over the years. There were too many questions and not enough data for me so I decided that I could put up with the annoyance of glasses and contacts.

If they are like most doctors, its because they dont think anyone other than themselves would be good enough to perform the surgery...

(although, in reality, there are risks, even if minor, and if your entire career depends on you having really good eyesight then you probably dont take the risk. But if you can cope with having 15/20 vision or something like that, then the consequences of something going wrong is much less)
