Interesting but if you are bringing your hand back under your surfboard the way that it is often touted as the best paddle then you essentially are bending at the elbow and keeping the hand faced the right way.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Should the shorter "power" strokes during the catch phase go under the board as well or on the side of the board?

The high elbow catch is like the ‘foot over the fins’ for swimming!

If you want to learn perhaps more than you ever want about surf paddling, check out Rob Case at https://www.surfingpaddling.com/ and on YouTube

His ‘dropping in’ show is really interesting as well, gets into the science of surfing. Ep 1 has some really good stuff on paddling into and catching a wave - for example, that even the best surfer can only paddle at 4 Mph but even the slowest smallest wave is moving at 7-9mph...

His videos are super helpful, especially the tip of concentrating the stroke backwards toward your feet instead of down. That was a game changer for me.
