UK surfer hoping to surf early Friday morning in Santa Cruz

Postby Ramdog » Thu Sep 17, 2015 12:40 pm

Hi,

This may be a long shot but I'm over from the UK on business and I have a small window of opportunity for a surf on Friday morning before my flight home on Friday afternoon. I have my wetsuit but no board, I am staying in Los Gatos and was considering heading over to Santa Cruz first thing Friday morning, in a perfect world I could do with hiring a board for a couple of hours from 7am, is that something anyone could help me with or does anyone know anywhere that does early hire?

Any advice would be great

Thanks

I don't think any of the rental places open before 8. Your best bet would be to go to freeline on 41st avenue in capitola tonight before they close and do a 24-hour rental. They have a pretty good selection of rental boards.

I think, but am willing to be wrong, that the early board rental (hire) shops in Santa CruZ open at 08:00. You can run an internet search with this phrase to find the rental shops: "santa cruz surfboard rental."

I liked muoh92's suggestion to get the board the night before. I used to live close enough to Santa Cruz to surf there two times each month. I suggest you go over to Pleasure Cove and surf at 38th Street. The green house on the cliff you can see from the outback is Jack O'neil's previous home. It's referred to as Jack's house and you will appreciate it's location to surf that is good nearly every day.

If you do nothing else, then go to the Santa Cruz Surf Museum in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse. It's located on West Cliff Drive at Steamer's Lane surf break. It's open Thursday through MOnday from Noon to 4 pm in Winter and Wednesday through MOnday from Noon to 4 pm in Summer. Call them at 831 420 6289 to verify which season they think it is.
