Girlfriends lost to surfing: im in a steady relationship. the reason is because its flat as a lake atm :(
PoST TIP: longboard cruisin can be fun!

Once again, Expanding the QuevA!:

So as the waves have been flat for almost 2 weeks(since thanksgiving really), I've decided to buy a longboard skateboard. I made the deck out of carbon fiber using vaccum bagging and such but its such great tool for transportation here at the university! i have classes that i just can't walk to in 15mins, so i skate. I decided to put the longboard cruiser wheels to make sure i don't have suicide runs on the sidewalks(those cracks hate me!)

ANNNNNYWAY
to get to the point, during this long flat spell i took up a super hard cardio(its where i run a lap along the track and then quickly do 10 pushups, then without a break i do another lap and then 10 more, do this 5 times, then 2 more sets) and then i also longboard cruise around my neighborhood. Although i do feel like a punk, and society looks down on me, i must admit it feels great to get back into something that kinda feels like surfing.

they look something like this;

Image

these longboards are actually fun, and lucky for ME my street has a super slight incline, so i kinda bottom turn from the sidewalk into peoples driveways

so i expanded my quiver to a land only surfboard/skateboard/travel companion. Although i don't think it helps stop the shaking from being away from teh water :P

p.s. from what i heard i missed the last warm days for us. the water was 63ish 3 weeks ago, now its down to 57 :spew:

Hey man, a big thanks for this thread. It's definitely inspiring (it inspired me to register after lurking for a few months even!)

I'm 23 and my wife has been pushing me recently to be more active. I used to kayak and was a sponsored skater (rollerblading) . I've been surfing off and on since I moved to Cali about 4 years ago. Until now though it has been very rarely. We are actually about to start looking for a place to rent and the wife has ok'd me to spend more for a place right near the beach. Right now I live in San Luis and I surf pretty much all the local spots, Pismo beach, Morro Bay, Cayucos and sometimes Avilla when everything else is closing out it breaks perfectly for some reason.

My biggest issue over the past 3 years has been my weight, at one point I was around 290 lbs. I've since lost about 90 lbs. and am beginning to get back into fighting shape so to speak. I think I went through about 4 boards in under 3 years even though I was surfing less than 8 times a month. I'd never heard of someone snapping a soft-top before, but I managed to do it. I've been scraping pennies up over the last 2 or 3 months and finally got enough to pick up a new board. I am capable of riding pretty reliably, but due to my weight I have almost no experience with anything under about 8'. This Monday I picked up a 7' 2" Steve Coletta board for about $130. It had some damage, but nothing that a bit of Qcell and Resin couldn't fix.

Don't mean to HiJack your thread, just wanted to say thanks and let you know it is definitely inspiring. I'm one of those all or nothing kind of people and my goal is to surf pretty much every day this summer. Thanks a bunch bro and hang loose.

^its all good in da neigh-ba-hood!

I havn't surfed up in san Lupis yet, one day i will!

dude i use to be fat too, but my love for surfing has accidentally caused me to loose weight. I've always been a heavy built muscle man, but i had fat too. surfing has shaved off the fat and my lean muscle is showing. this was less than a year ago. lost 60 +-5lbs. Surfing isn't really meant for us big guys unless we have bigger boards. I've come to realize that as I will have to loose more weight and gain alot of skill to fly into the air and land it. I'm sitting at 200lbs with 12%body fat. I'm trying to get down but its kinda getting harder and harder. I've always been inspired by power. big guy you would think are alot stronger than you, and this is true in surfing. gald u found this spot :D

WHICH LEADS ME TO MY UPDATE POST!

Progresss Checkpoint: 1 year and 5-6 months
Girlfriends lost to surfing: well well well.... lets add another to this number haha. i think we were at 4?
PoST TIP: Future fins are better.

download/file.php?id=675&t=1
So as you all know i had a new surfboard yada yada YA!~ I friggin hit a reef and the back fin of the FCS(freakn crappy system) and it stabbed my board and punctured my poor baby :'(
i almost died of dehydration from crying so much!!!! :(

so i fixed it and now its missing a fin. SO i went back to da good ol pumpkin seed. I don't know why i left this board. I honestly think i don't want another board anymore. BUT as a typical surfer nugget i always find something to blame my lack of skills for, so i found fins. I bought a new set of Future fins, AM2 to be exact, set up for bigger guys who weigh 180lbs or more. Turns out my old fins were the same size, but something will be different i suppose. we'll find out tomorrow after i get the old futures out haha.
Image

So the problem was my future fins are stuck. As a chemical engineer not only did i know HOW to dissolve salt, i wanted to do it the most extreme way possible! ANYONE can just take warm tap water and pour it in and wait a while the pour some more and pull them out, BUT NOOOOOO!O!!!!! I wanted to add vinegar! and it works of course. but my surfboard now smells like salad HARHARHARHAR!
Image.
Image
^i have no clue who that is lol.

so anyway bigger surfers spray more water. When you talk about spray, there are 3things involved.

1. Power Image
2. Weight Image
3. Speed Image

using 2 & 3 1 is affected. In ENGRISH, the bigger you are and the faster you are moving the more water you will displace, "spray", making you seem POWERFUL MUHAHAHA.
Lets see how this works.

Someone who is light also travels faster, it takes less energy. This is why sometimes small surfers can make huge splashes, now what if that same person was a big guy like myself who was moving the same speed? i could put out a building fire...

In order to maximize the speed, follow my tutorial on pumping for speed.

its works wonders and its using alot of complicated movements that are too in depth to explain( ur using fins and potential energy)
By maxing speed we eliminate one variable from our equation. So we are left with weight and power.

Weight is something we can't change too rapidly, so lets assume that your weight stays the same when you surf.

lets forget physics and just use power=force exerted.

SO HOW CAN A SURFER BECOME MORE POWERFUL!?
By using his weight+speed+ POWER =MASSIVE SPRAY

\
power can be added by watching my new tutorial on a backside snap. developing power is an easy set of motions with the upper body that is transfered to the lower body. Ex: arm swing downward.

Heres teh clip, hope you enjoyed the post!(it was a marathon one too)

NOW THAT YOU ARE POWERFUL, GO SPRAY SOME KIDS IN YOUR BREAK!

I've edited your quote, but full applause for the weight loss, and the discipline to get there, you deserve to have the board of your chice and lots of time to adjust to the new shortness. AT 23 you have lots of your life to look forward to and to enhance. Full score Madcat :D

Making big rooster tails is a bit of a Catch 22. If you can see the spray you are making then you are looking in the wrong direction and wont' be making lots of spray....
If you are doing it right you'll never see it as you are looking the opposite way.

It's an awful predicament, making something beautiful but not being able to see it. But damn it feels good and when you paddle back to the line up and your mates say "how was that last one?" (that means they saw it) you know it was good, and you reply "not bad but I messed up a bit on that one section" :D teeeheeehee surfing with mates is the best.
