haha...

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it! I think i'm going to go with the lock with the loop on it so i can attach it to the cars frame. It looks like i can stick some velcro on it and tuck it away while still attached to the car, so hopefully this will work.

Hmmm....they look like a good idea, but if someone did find it and subsequently nicked your car, not sure that your insurers would be that sympathetic when they find out you'd attached the key to the car, even if it is in a supposedly safe, locked box?

(apologies to whoever posted that thought originally, as i know i've read it somewhere but don't know who wrote it! )

Ummm... Someone has probably already said this, but:

Waterproof bag or something inside your wettie?

Another thought, would duct tape damage a wetsuit?

If not, take two rectangles of duct tape, put the key in the middle and stick them together, then another length of duct tape to attach it to your ankle.

yeah theyre a great idea, at least i thought so until mine got broken into and the key taken (fortunatly they couldnt drive the car away but they nicked what they could out of it).
I been using one of those aquapac things since, not convinced about them either - my key was wet after surfing today, still worked but it was damp.

The main thing is to stop them taking the car, cos if they really want your stuff theyll just smash a window, (so leave anything valuabe at home if possible) disconnecting the coil is a good start (unless theyre watching and see you doing it), i used to have a car with a switch under the dash to cut the power to the coil.

I know someone who bought an old camper van, there was a switch on the dash for a rear window heater, the guy thought "thats odd, theres a switch here but this van has no heater in the rear window", so he hit the switch out of curiosity and off went the engine, he was a bit shocked as he was driving it at the time but once he realised what the switch was doing hes made it a feature on all his other vans since.

After exhausting my options at locksmiths trying to get a normal key cut (without all the electronic stuff that water would damage) and finding out that no such thing is available for my car, I bought one of these :

http://www.surflock.com.au

I'm very happy with the quality as it's very solid and sturdy, and I can reach up in my rear wheel arch and attach it to the rear spring, so it's completly out of sight.

^ yup, that doesn't look bad at all...

I also found this:

Aquapac - 100% Waterproof Cases - USA

Not bad. Think i could strap it on my arm under my wetsuit? I could throw the fob into the ziplock bag and then into the aquapac for extra security...

What do you do with your keys?

Postby jnl90 » Sat Jul 07, 2007 8:08 pm

I don't know where else to ask this, so I'm doing so here. Sorry if it's not the right place.

To get to the beach, I have to drive there, being that I don't have the luxury of living right on it. When I get there, what am I supposed to do with my keys?

Some use an aquapac, a waterproff bag type thing that you carry in your suit, other people use a key pod, kinda like a small safe thingy with a combination lock you lock to the towing eye on your car. if you just have a plain key though, no electronic parts, just put it on a piece of string around your neck.

get a bit of string, put it through the hole thingy of your key, tie a knot in it so you have a big loop, put that loop around your neck and then put the key down the back of your wetsuit.

Dont hide it anywhere near your car. I once forgot my non-electronic key and so hid the electronic one in the exhaust pipe of my car - lasted about 20 paranoid filled minutes in the water before going to check that my car was still there and then went home. Everything was in my car so if it was stolen it would have been a long stroll home in a wetsuit on a cold winters day - even though I was local - no thanks!!! Surf was pretty good that day too

If you only have a central locking/electric key....sod it, get it wet and break it. I would rather go without central locking than without a car!!

Definately don't leave it on your car. There are people that will hang around just to watch for that. And as soon as you leave, BAM, they get everything. Best advice is to take it out with you. I don't have electronic keys, so it's easy for me. I just tie it to the string included in almost all boardshort pockets. If it's winter time, and I have a wet-suit on, I use the key pocket. Or try your leash. A lot of leashes have a key pocket on them. Or try the necklace idea, I like that one, might trey it sometime myself. Although I have not had a problem with the pocket string, and wet-suit key pocket.

I do this. I had a non electronic one cut for this purpose.
Chuck the elctric on the boot and take the non with me. Means the car isnt alarmed but it is all locked to i think its an ok compromise

Your wetsuit has a key pocket? Where'd you get that?
Can I get a key pocket to attach to the leash I have now?

I have a Rip Curl Fireskin suit. Right at the zipper there is a small strechy material pocket. Never lost the key from there yet. Your leash should have a little pocket at the ankle cuff. Not all leashes have them though.

Both of my wetsuits have key pockets,my o'neill firewall fullsuit and my ripcurl spring suit, what i do is i had an extra key made for both of my wetsuits and i just leave my house keys in my glove box. I would recommend a key pouch. Also you can get leashes with key pockets. Goodluck

I can't leave my electronic key in my van - if it got knicked I would be totally FU'd - stuck in middle of rural northern spain or somewhere with nothing but a wetsuit and board.

I use an aqua-pac - used one dozens if not 100s of times and it's never leaked and in some pretty big surf - even had wet suit unzipped by grinder and it stayed watertight. Make sure you follow insructions properly to get watertight seal though.
