Lombok - Selong Belanak - February - advices for beginners

Postby Djool » Fri Jan 03, 2025 11:32 am

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to stay 3 weeks for the end of my trip on Lombok island and heard that Selong Belanak is good for beginners (which I am)
Is it going to be good in february? I know it's the monsoon, I don't mind the rain but I'm scared the waves won't be there. Do you have any recommendations in this area?
Thanks in advance!

Good question, the rainy season is not a problem as such and will be slightly less rain and garbage polluted than Bali.
Winds may or now be helpful but early morning surfs yield better conditions. Selong Belanak is the softest beginner beaches , sand bay and often straight handers, small and some surf schools ideal for soft boards, waves between SB and Gerupuk are more suited to high capabilities in surf with some reef breaks, Your time will be less crowded due to the rainy season and some of the camps may be closed for maintainence. In gerupuk Don Don might be an easy wave to investigate.

About swells to give your spot wave, all depends on what is happening deep south in the Indian ocean, but as a beginner I hope the time is kind to you. Have fun :Da

Good points there! Yeah, the rainy season won’t be a huge issue, especially compared to Bali. Selong Belanak is perfect for beginners with its soft waves and sandy bottom. The waves there are usually mellow, but the conditions can be better early in the morning.
Gerupuk definitely has some more challenging spots, so it's good to know your limits. If you're looking for quieter times, the rainy season should be good, but some camps might be closed. Don Don in Gerupuk could be a good choice for a mellow wave too. Just keep an eye on the swell and enjoy the ride! :)

Selong Belanak is actually a great beginner break. During February, waves will most likely still be good, but the monsoon season makes the weather quite unpredictable. Best to catch it early in the morning before getting windy. If you absolutely need an alternative, try Tanjung Aan – less people and excellent waves too.

If you are concerned about soft waves, refer to forecasts on Surfline or Windy. Kuta Lombok also offers some beginner spots, and in case of bad weather, there is always an alternative – like snorkeling.
