Hello rippers and nose-divers, equally respected.
After being in Latin America for a year I am running a bit out of inspiration for destinations. Not all this year was spended surfing, but now I got hooked and I am looking for a
- uncrowded (prefer more shitty wave to perfect one)
- intermediate friendly
- chill, nature place (no party-party)
Place in Colombia or anywhere in Latin America (no, not central America although it is good there. I wanna save this gem for another trip). I speak perfect Spanish and don't need to much comfort.
Advice on nuqui/Choco
Nuqui was my choice, but now I've heard that it is more for expert surfers and as a solo traveller, hard to get to some spots.
If you have any advice on spots or info about nuqui and surrounding. Very appreciated!
Below I will share my (favourite) spots in Latin America.
Peru:
- Huanchaco & chicama: nice place, bit to busy and touristy for me but huanchaco is pretty consistent (but powerful) and chicama didn't work when I was there. Left point.
- Mancora: Horrible! Crowded with ppl taking classes who get pushed in your wave. Only possible to surf in morning due to crowd. Left point. Party available.
- Lobitos: chill, amazing place, always some waves (been here for few months). Definitely my favourite place by far. Piscinas as the gem of this town.
Brazil:
- Pipa:To distracted by party but Pipa is pretty nice for surf (not close to town, but a bit further there are short board waves as well). I will try to find the exact town, but it was a nice right over some rocks.
Ecuador:
Aah, uncrowded, nature,.. beautiful.
- playas/Puerto engabao: honestly the most unknown but nice place I found. There are as many street pigs as street dogs here. Nice right point break, chill vibe with locals. Like 1 hotel there. Beach and right point. Playas close by with many point breaks of different heights. Guys, can recommend. Will go back in a few weeks.
- Salinas: I feel like I wasn't ready yet for the waves here, but I had a good time at a left point, surfing with sea wolves and turtles! Weird town tho, not so good atmosphere (lots of old people on holiday).
- Ayampe/Las tunas: walkable distance. Nice beach break that can get pretty big! Very chill place in nature, no crowd, not much to do besides nature. No noise allowed after 22:00. Enjoyed it a lot.
- Olon & montanita: Olon is a nice, small, quiet town worth to try the mellow (but sometimes big) beach break. Montanita is party party, fun for a while but surf was not good when I was there. Definitely not the "surf mecca" everyone describes it to be but if you wanna party go there and stay in Olon I'd say.
- Mompiche: aah, so relaxing. Small, quiet town (well, like 1 street) with a soft beach break into a rivermouth and a left point that's nice.
Colombia:
Mostly nature and hiking but was looking for waves in Caribbean coast for a month. Only one place worth mentioning:
- buritaca/palomino: palomino is like a fake surf town, looks like a surfers place but not good waves and not many surfers. There is a beach called arrecifes that works (no people) but messy. Best place was close to buritaca in front of "viajero hostel" they charge to go on the beach, but walk the left road instead of this overly-priced place and you get on the beach anyway. Nice right. Not really point break but always goes right due to the beach. (Costeno beach worthy mention, but meh..).
I heard tayrona park can have good waves but not when I was there. Also hard to go there (arrecifes etc).
So, I think these are all (noteworthy) surf destinations that I can think of this moment, all visited this year. Feel free to contact me for more details or tips on how to get there or what to expect. I hope this helps someone.
If anyone has some spots that I should look into, please let me know! I have 4 months left on this continent and would love to continue the surf journey. After that it's off to Asia! (But I still gotta start my research, but feel free to share your favourites!)
First post, hope you enjoy. Cheers!
