Surfing in Mexico

Postby mrpopo » Mon Dec 18, 2023 11:37 am

Hi, I’m a business traveler who is going to Mexico for a few days and I’m looking for some surfing places to visit. I have some free time and I want to enjoy the waves and the culture. Do you have any recommendations?

You could probably help yourself a little more by tell roughly where in Mexico you are going, then places near there can be suggested!
A lot of Mexico there and quite a lot is nowhere near surf! :P
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Okay, I have finalized my place. I will be in either Puerto Escondido or Manzunte. Those two places looks good for surfing. I have contacted a local from here https://gowithguide.com and they are arranging everything for me. Hopefully it will be a good trip.

Does anyone have experience travelling for surf in Michoacán state?

Looking to get away from the main stream tourist destinations visiting the stretch between Manzanillo and Ixtapa though travel advisories say to flat out not to to Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán states

You still going to MIchoacan? I've done the northern area, La Ticla and Boca de Alpisa, there is also Rio Nexpa that I wanted to go to but haven't made the trip there yet. When you going?

Awesome spots nearby too, when I went it was 25ft and dangerous, so we went to other spots nearby that where so much fun! For sure book a trip to chacacua, fun trip and a perfect right side barrel after a great A frame

Probably not until mid-late November ... I wanted to go end of March / early April but I don't think I can pull it off. Plus I have a friend who has been going down there every year for the last many and he's going again late Nov. Be nice to know someone who is familiar with the area.

La Ticla and Nexpa areas are where’d want to spend most of my time and check out a few beaches in between n around those two. Highway 200 is reasonably safe if you stick to the coastal side, don’t travel at night and don’t drive inland?

Been reading in the news of farmers n military getting taken out by IEDs and mayor candidates being assassinated recently in Michoacan. I don’t want to be anywhere close to that crazy xxxxx.

If you haven't been there, look up Boca de Pascuales, it is in Colima which is north of where you are thinking of going and is not having civil unrest unlike its southern neighbor. There are some fun breaks just north of there too, had a blast there a couple of times.

Enjoy

Pascuales is on my radar too, but I hear it's a very heavy wave. Not sure I'd want to start the trip there, but maybe end the trip there.

I do enjoy renting a car and being a surf explorer, but am often by myself. Sounds like sticking to the coastal surf towns/villages is reasonably safe? Pescuales, La Ticla, Nexpa, Saladita, Troncones ... is looking for surf along the coast outside of the main destinations ill advisable?

Go places that have nearby breaks, la ticla is hours away from rio nexpa, but at boca de pascuales cuyutlan and el paraiso are smaller breaks within 15 minutes. Same if you go to Huatulco, there are breaks withing minutes, including Barra de la Cruz withing 45 minutes

For example, at Puerto Escondido, la punta is 3 miles south, playa blanca 10 miles south, and chacahua 20 miles north, so good for round trips where you are back before sundown for safety and a beer.

Think of short round trips rather than staying at different places, but a blast to discover!!!

There are a few varied surf breaks around Pascuales other than the big barreling board snapping break?

I'd have two weeks, the plan was to fly into Manzanillo, rent a vehicle and spend a week-ish in La Ticla and a week-ish in Nexpa... Sounds like I'd be better off spending maybe a week around Pascuales and a week around La Ticla? ... I guess November is not so reliable for south swell which Nexpa needs.. My friend has been going down to La Ticla every winter for 2 months for the last 6-7 years and seems to love it; also mentioned other fun though somewhat less consistent surf breaks not too far from La Ticla if you have a vehicle.

Huatulco is on my radar as well, but it sounds weird surfing there. I hear you need to hire a guide or stay at a surf camp to surf at most of the breaks around Huatulco. Puerto Escondido I'm told is also very crowded with more of a city vibe, which is less my jam. How bout Salina Cruz?

cuyutlan and el paraiso are just to the north of Pascuales yeh? Anything just to the south that's less of a board breaker, or is it pretty much onto La Ticla?

Hello! I’m Joaquín, but everyone calls me Joaco. I’m a local passionate about this magical place where I was born—Oaxaca’s stunning coastline. Living here is truly a privilege. I’m part of a small coastal community in Oaxaca that holds many secrets, and the Chontales, our local people, are the guardians of these treasures.

This coast is a paradise for surfers, with over 20 incredible spots along just 100 km between Salina Cruz and Huatulco. From April to October, when the swell season kicks in, this part of the world offers some of the most epic, world-class waves you can find, without the crowded lineups you see elsewhere. Whether you’re looking for a variety of surf experiences or just the perfect wave, this is the place to be.
