I've been travelling quiet a bit for the surf and i know how precious some tips can be.
Ask me your questions here (so everybody can see them) and i'll try to reply to all of them (i activated the notification)
You can find more info on my website too

Hey!

I'm planning on doing a trip to Biarritz in July/August. I'd like to stay for a long while - 6 weeks, ideally. Assuming that covid doesn't totally ruin surf plans, I'm going to go ahead with it.

I've surfed for a few years but am by no means an expert. I don't own a board currently but usually ride a 7-8 ft. hard-top longboard.

I don't have much in the way of preparations so far - I'd likely train down there and then figure out accommodation, or else I might try to get a hold of a van and just sleep in that for the summer. For surf board, I was just going to get one second hand before coming or off of someone there.

However, I'm also super open to any suggestions you might have that would make life easier. I am on sort of a budget but not really (basically I'm perfectly happy to live cheap but will also happily pay for things that make the trip easier/more enjoyable).

So there's my ramble. Any tips from your end? :)

Cheers,

Alex

Hello Alex,

It's usually a pretty busy time on the Basque Coast but i really have no idea of how it's going to be this year.

Pretty hard to find a place to rent that is not weekly rate but as it's going to be a weird season, people might be happy to rent it cheaper for a longer period instead of taking the risk not to rent at all.

You can have a look on Airbnb or http://www.leboncoin.fr

You might also find a van on this website that you could sell back at the end of the season or drive back to Netherland.

We have a few second hand surfboards at the shop in those dimensions, you can have a look on our website if you want to try surfboards before you buy it http://www.martysurfdelivery.com

Hope i could help you,

Cheers,

Marty

Marty,

Thank you so much! Yes, this helps a lot. This season is going to be weird I think but it might also be even busier if locals are out of work and have less to do...we'll see. I think I'm going to drive down the coast from Soulac-sur-Mer until Bilbao or so. If you have any local spots to hit up in that route, do let me know!

And yes, I'l have a look at the boards for sure. It's nice getting one from a store because I know you'll have taken good care of it and all that. Thanks again for the help.

cheers,

Alex

Hi Marty,

One more question! My plan this summer is tentatively to do a mix of hostels and sleeping in the van I rent. I know there are rules for le camping sauvage or I guess just sleeping in your van in certain spots. I would like to know what your experience is with where this is generally tolerated near the coast (and where it is definitely not tolerated)?

Cheers,

Alex

Hello Alex,
It's getting harder and harder to sleep in your van near the coast but you can still go a little bit inland.
Enjoy !

Can you also recommend any places to stay and some restaurants?
