Where can a beginner travel and learn for a month?

Postby Sydney » Tue Oct 29, 2019 12:33 am

I tried surfing a few times this past January in San Diego and I'm hoping to continue learning. I travel alone and I have the opportunity to go somewhere for about a month this winter to surf. I'm a 20-year-old female from the United States. California and Hawaii would be closest to me, but I'm able to go further.

I have looked into surf camps but the maximum length is 7 days. I know they'll teach the fundamentals, but I think I'm simply too timid to go out alone for now. When I went to San Diego, I just took lessons from a surf school but it wasn't a great experience (new instructor every day and they all had different teaching styles).

Where's a mellow place to learn during November/December? Are there any longer term surf camps I can look into?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Sydney:

I am a new member here, but noted you asked a great question but saw no answer...I hope you got your surf trip in before the lockdown...I would have recommended Costa Rica as a relatively safe place to travel solo and to learn from one of the many great surf spots. Some areas get really mellow in the winter months (longboard season) which is good for learning.

Anyway, wanted to respond to your post.

I'm not sure about Thailand - the waves aren't great there. But Asia is fantastic (thought mostly closed for COVID). When it does open - and there's talk of maybe March with a test - I'd definitely recommend Sri Lanka. There are surf camps there that will host you for a month or more and you can barter for decent deals. You won't get lessons every day but can just pay for em when you like. I'd say steer clear of Weligama - the water's not the cleanest. Heaven on earth for me was Hiriketiya.
