Siargao in late December - Wrong idea with no experience?

Postby TomPoe » Sun Dec 02, 2018 1:27 am

Hi,

I will be in Cebu to dive there next week. I have said myself that when I was so close to Siargao, I would be going there to try surfing. So I bought flight tickets from 14th to 28th in Siargao. But unfortunately, I made research about surfing in Siargao after buying the tickets. And now I have found out that December isn't good for surfing so for somebody who has never surfed it will be worse. Is it true? Should I change my plans and not count with surfing there at that time?

Thank you

Three things , know before you go! ( your Hard earned money deserves that)
A good surf season may well be good for good surfers, size of waves and wind direction, out of season may be a smaller run of waves! And maybe learner suitable. Philippines and SE Asian countries all have a rainy season so water quality may be an issue.
Go see if surrf is possible NE wind swells at that time, but possibly ally morning chances , smaller crowds make contacts and PLAN your next trip accordingly.

Same if youndecide to buy a surfboard, come onto the forum and we can help, you choose a suitable board :D
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

I don't know that area at all. It could be flat as a lake when you get there or it could still be generating 1-3 foot waves. Your first two weeks of surfing will be in white water and small surf. So, you might not be there when the break is at its best, but all you need in terms of waves your first two weeks is small surf. To be honest, your first two weeks are basically boot camp for your body if you're not in good shape. Anyway, I suspect, for the kind of surfing you have planned, that you'll be able to get the small waves. If those small waves have a nice shape, then you're gold. I'd write a surf camp(s) and ask about the waves in December--are they big enough to learn on and get fun beginner rides in December? Good luck.

I was curious and found this.

If you’re looking for uncrowded surf, come from December to March. It’s uncrowded because it’s raining. A lot. If you want to learn how to surf, come anytime. If you have no idea why everyone keeps talking about surfing, then April to October are perfect for beach all day and party all night.

Rain could be a deal breaker so I'd do some more research.

Thank you for you reply

Yes, I know abou weather so I'm still thinking if it's good idea to go there. I have asked someone from Siargao who offers surf service there and he told me that it's no problem to surf there in December so I will go there. Then I can update this post.

Another problem is that my flights from Siargao goes at around 4pm on 28th December and flight from Cebu to MNL goes at around 2am the next day. I have read a lot of flights are canceled because of raining. So I'm thinking of rearranging my flight from Siargao.

Agrh why i didn't do better research. :/

I lived outside Subic in the Philippines when I was a kid. Would rain so much during rainy season it would routinely have water around the house too deep for my little rainboots.....I'd step outside and the boots would go under the water and fill up and I'd lose the boot on the next step. At 4 years old that's good times, not so much if you're on vacation probably.
