Where to Surf near Bangkok Thailand in January

Postby Ratfinksurfer » Mon Jun 18, 2018 10:18 pm

Hi All, I'm taking a month long family trip to Bangkok early next year. I'll be staying with the family for most of my trip but have been debating going on a short strike mission. A few years back I went to Bali for three days and really regretted it. (Too short, too much travel for such a short period.) Also I wasn't the best surfer and I stayed in the southern part of Bali. I basically paid a lot of money for a bad sunburn. I'm debating another short mission. I'd prefer to take the family, but travelling with toddlers to Indo or Mentawai is probably not gonna happen. Any suggestions? I'll probably just forego the solo adventure this time. But if any of you lads have an idea I'm all ears. I could do 7 days away max this time.

You have a lot of islands blocking swell and some airtravel to consider.
Phuket on the west coast and some spots slightly further north offer sporadic chances, the gulf of Thailand in known only for a very rare I happen to be lucky surf.

South of Phuket Sumatra blocks the swell, but there is rare surf in Malaysia.

You could fly to Padang and surf places in Sumatra, not necessarily a children with Trip. The Andaman islands, India territories offer some quality surf, but again a plane flight. I would ask whether your skills are up for the solo to frontier surf spots.

Java and Lombok offer chances too, the time of year will also effect your choices!

More details so we can help!
Are you taking your own board or hiring?

Thanks for the reply Jaffa. I'd say I'm between a beginner and an intermediate. I'm certainly a better surfer and in better shape than last time I tried to surf the reefs of south Bali.

I'll be in Bangkok for the month of January next year.

I wish my kids were a bit older, I'd just take them to the Mentawai islands with me!

Maybe it's for the best if I bide my time and wait 'til the kids are older and I'm a better surfer. Who knew a 40 year old could learn new tricks?!

I love Thailand.....the restaurants and markets alone can keep me spellbound.......not much in the way of surf though. Lots in the way of boating, boat tours, diving, kick boxing, massages and more food though.........went to one kick boxing thing in Phuket where they looked for volunteer from the audience (not sure if it was a plant or not) and a sunburned overweight Australian came into the ring, was given gloves and whaled on a Thai kid until he got kicked in the head................good times!
