Ankle braces and surfing love

Postby JERRY4321 » Sat May 21, 2016 9:06 am

Surf lovers,
I love surfing. It is a wonderful season for surfing too. But the problem I won't be able to do it this time :( . I met an accident last month. I was asked to take complete rest for the whole month. It was the horrible days of my life. :(
The day before yesterday I consulted my Doc for check ups. I thought it would be fine and I will be able to surf all the check ups. Check-ups were very disappointing. Doc asked to use ankle braces for further improvements. Mom bought ankle braces ( http://www.aesmphysiotherapytoronto.ca/products/foot-ankle-braces/ ) from AESM, Toronto. I don't how long will I be like this. I don't wanna miss this season. I wanna surf badly. Guys, anyone here in a similar situation of this sort? Will this help me overcome my problem asap? Is there any problem in using this braces and surfing?

You can surf with a brace with a bit of restriction, but it's doable. Waikikichan on here has surfed with his ankle in a full cast.

Whether that is going to be bad for your ankle is for your doctor to tell you. I suspect it's not the best idea but no way I can give an opinion

As a retired Chiropractor with my speciality in sports medicine alongside my general practice.
I advise you to consider a few things. ..
Firstly the actual injury, the differences between strain , sprains and tears, then breaks.
They all take a certain time to regain a healed structure under your skin, going back early has the risk of injuring the injury or tissue surrounding it! The injury can be worsened or made a permanent disability.
Heed your Doctors advice :!: :!:
Beware the stage when you think it is ready, a major trap there!
It is also hard to give any advice unless we have professional diagnosis.
So if you don't think the doctor understands your situation go see a sports medicine doctor who has an understanding of the stresses of surfing.
Be prepared to miss a season or two if needs be, so you can be assured of being able to surf again.
I lost 26 weeks last year with a knee injury ( old rugby knees) but improving in performance every surf but limiting water time so as not to tire the injury site!
Had a nice surf today and everything worked.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Jaffa's advice is spot on! With injuries it's important to take the long view. Give your body time to heal and it will perform well when you return to the water.

Keep your stoke going with another activity that can be SAFELY done during your recovery. I injured my back while bending over to pickup a paper clip :bang: and have been sidelined for a month! Last week my doctor gave me the OK to swim easy breast stroke laps in the pool to keep fit. I will not paddle out until the back is 100% pain free.

I think perhaps you should have a good rest for speedy recovery. Once recovered, you can surf forever. I'm worried if the injury get worsen. You'll gonna stay out for a very long time. Take care!

Please be sure to wear ankle brace. Compression ankle brace for sports can not only reduce the variety, but also provide support and reduce ankle pressure. It helps a lot in recovery. I have been using it since I broke my ankle, and my condition is much better now. :D

Jerry, all braces on the web page you provided appear to be fabric, save the one at page bottom. Assuming you'll be using fabric brace(s), then consider knee boarding. Knee boarding has all the same dynamics and thrills that stand up surfing has and you don't have to pop up onto your feet. It's easier to catch barrels, too!
