Indoor Wave London

Postby Saralita » Tue Feb 18, 2014 3:39 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is an indoor wave closer to London than Bedford? I am stuck in London and about to loose it!

Thanks:-)

EEEEEEEEEK I can only imagine the pain, suffering and withdrawal symptoms you are going through.
A mindless methadone of surfing £17 an hour, bedford and Yorkshire seem your only options!!

I was looking around the internet at artificial waves and found this article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/6384237.stm
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The company talked about in this article from 2007 has gone bankrupt, it build a number of artificial reefs around the world almost all failed or had to undergo extensive remediation . that pool has and probably will not happen sorry!

Bummer but it sounds like there will be some decent over head manmade waves somewhere
soon.

Saralita,
I know your pain all too well as I too am a London based surfer.
There are a couple of options open too you, if you drive then Joss Bay is on the Kent coast, it doesn't happen often but when it does the waves are decent and the locals are friendly, about 1hr 20min from London. you also havea fewspots on the South Coast (Sussex) namely the Hotpipe at Shoreham and further along the coast is East Wittering which is a lovely beach, although it does break quite close to shore and you do have to watch out for the groynes, again localism is not a problem all the ones I've met so far have been really helpful and friendly. Aside from that there is surf on the Essex and Norfolk coasts but I've not tried either so can't help you out. There is also talk odf the artificial reef in Boscombe (Bournemouth) being repaired and reopened in April this year, but I don't hold out much hope as it has never really worked as it was supposed to, there are also plans underway for an artificial wave to be built in Bristol. Google 'The Wavegarden UK' to find the site and info.
Apart from that you just have to commit yourself to travelling further afield, you could always join the London Surf Club who regularly travel the length and breadth of the country in search of waves.
Good luck.
