Wetsuit for June: 3/2 if you regularly surf where a wetsuit is not required. A 2mm suit or even a spring suit if you surf where you use a 4/3 or thicker regularly.

When based in Torrance, you'll find yourself going to nearby Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. San Pedro has some regular breaks, too. I would not surf at El Segundo or Palos Verdes due to pollution in the water and sediments. Do yourself a favor and perform an internet search for "LA County - Surfing in LA County, United States." This search will turn up many useful hits.

If you want to experience some additional breaks that are slightly better, then go south to Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.

I surf Torrance and Redondo all of the time, I suggest going all the way to the end of the strand to the parking lot, it has a big ramp down to the beach, the waves break a little further out there than the rest of the beach. I like to go out at low tide so the waves aren't breaking right on the shore, but I've seen better surfers at all tides.
