Finding The Perfect Surfing Vacation/Camp

Postby RinkyDink » Sun Mar 13, 2016 5:09 am

I noticed a lot of surfing vacationers would like information on ideal surfing locations (and that's understandable), but I don't see them come back to the forum and leave any surfing vacation reports. If people actually reviewed the places they went to and left meaningful reviews, other vacationers might be able to search that info and get some useful information. Subject lines like Surf Vacation: San Francisco along with some useful information could actually make this site something of a repository of travel information. Reviewers could write reports like this.

Surfing Location: San Francisco
Surf Camp Name (if applicable): Billybob's World Of Surf
Time of year: January
Accommodations: Squatted in Golden Gate Park because hotels are outrageously expensive.
How expensive was the place: Ridiculously expensive.
Beaches Surfed: Ocean Beach, Fort Point, Lindemar
Surfing conditions: Huge shore pound at Ocean Beach, difficult paddle-out at OB, fun waves, intermediate to advanced surfing level . . .
Tips for surfing this place: 4/3 wetsuit, booties, hood
Hazards: Strong currents, Quality Assurance engineers in cafes, micro breweries packed with project managers, Disney stores, getting drunk at the Sushi Boat Restaurant, North Beach
Recommendations: Aunt Charlie’s Lounge, El Toro Taqueria, Castro Theater
Other: Make some time to wander around Oakland. Billybob's World of Surf was the best surf camp ever!

You gotta give some info to get some.

There are several things that happen around your question as I see it.
Often there is an advertising post by a surf camp, and of course everything is just the superb best there, this often in response to a previous single post asking or pretending they have used said perfect camp. So the advertising can be posted. Valuable information post are asked to post general information re the area rather their advertising.

There is also a section of a surf atlas outside the forum on this site, I wonder how many people go beyond the forum?

It is quite obvious that many first timers in all categories of post just come on and ask their question, without any awareness it may have been asked many times before.

The forum for me is great fun, I enjoy helping and stirring the pot! If what do helps someone stay safe and get stoke :mexwave:

I completely agree. I came to this forum for the first time because I wanted to find out about surfing destinations. I think there could actually be some great information here if people started posting it to the forum. For example, I find it really difficult to find good wetsuit reviews. There are reviews on Amazon, but I think they could be better. I've actually thought about posting pictures of my gloves, booties, and wetsuit, along with my impression of the stuff and the date of purchase, so other surfers could get an idea of whether those products were worth buying. I love the grip of my Billabong gloves, but they started splitting along the fingers after about 2 weeks of use. There is obviously a huge need for surfing vacation information out there, but it's hard to find good information because I think a lot vacationers don't have anywhere to post their experiences. This forum could be a place to find that info. I'm just suggesting people leave more information so others can learn from it.
