Surfing in Queensland July/August winter?

Postby sophiemarie » Sun May 12, 2013 7:50 pm

Hello everyone,

I am travelling to Australia during June/July/Aug, I am aware it is winter during those months, and I would like to surf/snorkel and spend a lot of time in the sea, of course.

What do you guys wear surfing then? Do I need a wetsuit, or will a rash and boardies be warm enough? Just some general idea's will be helpful please! I don't know how cold it gets.

(I will be at Gold Coast, Brisbane then Townsville)

Thanks a lot

Hi there,
I live in Noosa, 130km north of Brisbane and I surf in a springsuit most winter days, only when it's overcast and the winds are really strong, I go into a 3/2 steamer (I feel the cold though and some people are happy in a springsuit on the coldest days). The further north you go, the warmer the water gets. Noosa is the northern most point where you can surf (with consistency) on the coast. They say they have waves in Agnes Waters/1770 (which is the start of the Great Barrier Reef) but that's not very often. June-August is our winter. The nights are chilly and can go as low as 0 degrees some years but the days are usually around the 18-20 degree mark. It is also our beach break time, the points do not usually work but the beache break are super fun around that time of the year and you have fewer crowds.
If you need any help in/around Noosa, let me know.

^^^^ Yup 8)

Springsuit should be fine most days, so as your wettie can take up a lot of luggage space/weight, a 2mm or 3/2mm shortie is probably your best bet :D

The crowds on the gold coast will still be significant - don't imagine that you'll get pristine beaches all to yourself just because its winter, unless you jump in the car and head out of town, which is well worth doing :surfing:

cheers guys! I am going up from Gold Coast to Magnetic Island. I think Agnes Water may be my last chance of a surf before heading back again :)
