Hypto Krypto vs Torq Pod Mod X-Lite

Postby EastCoastsurfing21 » Wed Apr 19, 2023 11:55 am

East coast weekend warrior (go about once a month)

5’10 175lb athletic 21 year old

Been surfing a 7’6 x 22 x 3 55L for about a year consider myself to be a low intermediate surfer (can bottom turn and ride the face) looking for something smaller that’s fun to still progress on (should stick it out with my 7’6 for awhile I know but stoked on trying out a smaller board)

Breaks I surf: Ocean city, MD / OBX / Wrightsville

Looking for something I can surf from 2-3ft clean waves to overhead when I get a bit better

Was considering these used boards near me:

-6’2 Torq Pod mod x-lite 40.5L
-5’10 Torq pod mod x-lite 35L
-6’0 Hypto Krypto 36L
-5’10 Hypto Krypto 33L

Hoping to be able to duck dive as well for when I do head out on bigger days. Let me know what you guys think!

None of those IMO.

I’d suggest something around 6’10”. Going too short too fast without daily/near daily practice is a recipe for frustration.

First, please understand I am trying to help you progress in your surfing and am not putting you down in anyways.

1) If you are not currently doing cutbacks, more than just turn ups and turn downs, then you are not ready to go shorter.
2) If you consider yourself to be Low-Intermediate, do you consider the boards you chose to be Intermediate level boards ? Average level surfer boards ? or more advanced level surfer boards ?
3) What criteria did you use to choose those certain boards ? The manufacturers website and volume calculator ?

I appreciate the responses, I Won’t take anything you say to heart just glad somebody is giving me advice man!

I consider the boards to be somewhat of “easy” boards to ride in comparison to hpsb shapes (full of volume) but for me in retrospect none of these are gonna be “easy” because it’s such a big jump down. In all honesty I chose based on volume calculators putting me at about 40L give or take a couple liters based on athletic ability. I chose to go with the 5’10 torq pod mod x-lite because I will “grow into it” and figured if I struggle too much I’ll hop on a 6’10 mid to ease the gap because I know I’d eventually like a mid (love the float style of mids). Definitely was an impulse buy based on being young and athletic and being too confident I can handle it but will check back in and let you guys know how it goes looking to try it out in some swell we are getting in the next couple weeks!

Appreciate you guys again! Keep doing what your doing this is way more helpful than the Reddit forum for surfing lol

Athletic ability and being young do help bridge the gap (I made a big jump and it worked out ok, just takes more time and is frustrating for a good while), just be careful not to make bad habits going too short and keep practicing as much as you can, good luck!
When the wave breaks here, don’t be here. Or you’re gonna get drilled…
