Hot 69 epoxy fish - review

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of the hot 69 surfboards? I'm interested in their 6' 2" epoxy fish. its £310 with fins, wax, leash and free uk postage! Is that too good to be true? For £345 they'll add a bag too.
I would love to hear people's thoughts on it!

I have a little leery feeling about their advertising.

"The Hot Surf 69 surfboard range has been designed by surfers for surfers." By pro surfers for beginner surfers or by intermediate surfer for the intermediate surfer ?

"This boards been tested by surfers." That's better than some Motorcyclist or Golfer tested it. Well at least some monkeys in a lab weren't harmed.

"A great all round Board for summer or for someone stepping down from a mini mal who wants to make that next step with their surfing." So are you stepping down from a mini-mal ?

Is that too good to be true?

Yes, because that shape is not a Fish. It's a hybrid/egg with a swallow tail.

As for your question, yes I am stepping down. I currently have a 7 6 nsp fun board. It's great, I love it. But wanted to move to something smaller and get better at turning.

However I'm nervous about going to small and then struggling and it no longer being fun etc etc. So I was drawn to these boards for their generous volume - the 6 2 has 40ltrs.

On reflection I think I need to either take the plunge and step down or not. But going for an oddly shaped board that is short with tonnes of volume might not be the most sensible plan....

I agree with Waikikikchan it is a swallow tail. but that is neither here nor there.
The point about going to a step down ( read smaller board) is you thinking it will help you turn better, a mini mal and a mal can be turned well if you can turn well! If you are having fun on your current board , and catching your share of waves you will develop your skills more readily.

All the advertising blurb about how wonderful a board is showing mega turns etc in the hands of their champion surfer is the surfer‘s skill not the board.
For all boards you may be interested in, see if you can hire or borrow that board, your answer is in the water.

Another way of evaluating boards is to see how many of that model are around, if lots wonder why!

keep asking advice but push your surfing on your current board, see how you go.

As for your question, yes I am stepping down. I currently have a 7 6 nsp fun board. It's great, I love it. But wanted to move to something smaller and get better at turning.

I bought the 7’10” NSP Fun board for my wife, and use it when I can’t bring my 9’0”. They are great boards. However, if you have one of the older MT bolt thru the deck fins, then that will be a limiting factor for turns. If you have the newer FCS fin system, try swapping out the stock G-5 fins for the MR-TX fins in a 2+1 set up. The board will transform after that.

I also own the 6’4” NSP Fish ( which again isn’t a true fish, it’s a bump swallow retro fish/hybrid). Getting a smaller board will not help you turn better. Learn to maximize your turning technique on that current 7’6”. When you begin to go beyond it’s capabilities, THEN go down.

So I think I will learn to get better on my current board. It does have the old style bolt through fins you're talking about. They're pretty flimsy plastic ones, very easily bent with my fingers.

How bad is that? Any one know if those old screw through nsp fins can be swapped for something stiffer?

Another thing you can do for free is just remove the center fin and just run it as a Twin. That will help loosen it up.
