Current and New Board Advice

Postby wardyadam » Fri Jun 30, 2017 6:19 pm

Hi Guys!

First off, I apologize for my newbness - I understand your pain

I am after some advise on a surfboard I have found myself with and some advice on a new board

After entering a Mountain bike / surf competition (I am a very keen mountain biker) I found myself winning the surfboard...

I believe this exact board has been used by a few pros - Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau, Barry Mottershead and Conor Maguire. (So I was told by Redbull)

I have been surfing a few times and loved it to bits and would love to get into this but from my research I believe this is not a good board to start with?
1 - What type board is this?
2 - Has it a value or have similar ones sold if I was to try and shift it? If so anyone interested?
3 - What board is best for me to look at if I am after getting into surfing? I have used foamies before and stood up no problems, where I live (South coast near portsmouth) the waves don't get much bigger than 1-2 ft i believe... although I would be traveling to get good surf

Thank you so much for the help guys! :D

Welcome to the shark side, wardyadam.

Though I wouldn't blame you for keeping that beauty, everybody here will tell you to start with a longboard. Sell that one and use the $ for a nice epoxy or fiberglass 9-footer. Or if you're rich, hold onto it and buy a longboard and just keep that one around for show.

Hi RobSF,

Thank you! - What type/style of board would you suggest starting out on?

Rich I certainly am not :( - Any ideas on a rough price these boards go for?

I'm in California and have no idea what a board goes for where you are. Can't even guess, though others can.

"Longboard" is the kind, as opposed to a mal(ibu) or a funboard or anything else. You want a round nose, not a pointy one. You say you've had no trouble with a soft-top, and if you don't plan on being out more than a few times a year, a soft-top may be all you need. But I'd suggest a hard surfboard, just because they last longer and, when they're long enough, aren't much more difficult to learn to ride on. Either epoxy (stronger and stiffer) or fiberglass (classic, but a little easier to ding up).

In California, the cost is anywhere from $300 for a solid used board to $1,000+ for a new one. You can get a good new epoxy board for $500 here.

Buying used boards can be tricky, especially when you're just starting out, since you can so often get stuck with something that is waterlogged or susceptible to it through cracks, etc. But they're great deals when you know how to buy them.

The main thing is to avoid anything less than 8'6" unless you're small. 9'6" or 10' is not bad to go with (assuming you have a vehicle that can transport it) if you're a male of average height/weight or above.

Others will have more advice. I'm just gabby right now because I'm avoiding work I should be doing . . .

I am not sure how you've been out on it a few times ( or if it was just on a foamie ? ). Those screw holes running parallel down the deck are for foot straps and weights. Did you put wax on the deck over those holes or you went out as is ?

That board is for TOW-IN surfing on a monster 20+ foot wave ( not 24 inches ). They are built really heavy. As someone who listed that VERY exact board on Gumtree has already stated as being 4 times heavier than a normal board.

So are you the one selling it ? If so, why are you asking us "what type of board is it ?" if you already know it's a TOW-IN board ?

Question for you since you know MTB, what would be a better bike ? A Specialized Demo 8 or a Trek Session 9.9 ?
