Will my current board be okay to use?

I'm a VERY beginner surfer. My parents have already purchased me a fish board so I have been using that to surf. I'm jut wondering that although it is small (5'10), is it still okay to use as a beginner? I weigh 93 pounds and I'm 5'0 tall. I'm also a female and while I'm not in the best shape, I'm definitely not out of shape. The waves that I'm surfing are very small... they are never more than 5 feet and are usually around 2-3.

Usually if you can,
3 feet over your head is a good starting point, to learn to catch waves and stand up.
Later moving down to 2 feet over your head once you can turn and go both ways.
1 foot over your head, you really need a good grasp of all the basic moves, paddling power and wave knowledge to fully ride that length.

BUT.......... a 5'10" is better than a 0 foot board.

As mentioned its a bit short to be 'the ideal' beginner board; however there is no board which a beginner cant use. A longer board will make things easier, but at your height and weight you can probably do ok with the fish board (especially if you are already a comfortable swimmer)

So give it a go. Remember that learning to sure is hard, but if it just seems impossible after a few months see if you can get hold of a longer board (rent or borrow) and see if it makes a difference.
