Complete Newbie- Any Advice

Postby Mckenzie » Tue Jun 25, 2019 10:12 pm

Hi all. I’ve been wanting to try surfing for a while now and I finally got a chance to go to the beach for a week in North Carolina and try. I just took a surfing lesson today and I was able to stand up quite a few times. I’m 16 and I want this to be a part of my life but I’m having some problems transitioning from working with an instructor to trying to catch waves by myself. I rented a board that’s 7’3” and I’ll have it until Saturday. If y’all have any advice on learning the ropes and reading waves I’d really appreciate it.

Read chapter 1 and 6 here

https://www.cornishwave.com/beginners-g ... surfboard/

Especially about positioning on the board (ch 1) and pearling and it’s causes (ch 6)

And don’t look down when you are popping up. Look up at here you are going

When paddling out, paddle smarter not harder- paddle out through rips or channels rather than straight out

These cover the most common basic problems/flaws of beginners (well that plus learning surf etiquette)
