HI I'm new, originally from Minnesota then Arizona. A local "friend" from HB I met out here has terrified me that if you do something wrong or say or act stupid the locals will xxxxx on you for it, and it's kept me from surfing sooner. Just want to surf, tho and be on the water. Grew up skiing and wake boarding. :?

Welcome to the forum. Pretty much as a beginner you should not be in the same surf break as the more advanced surfers. Find a place where other beginners surf
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Would I do that by asking or how do you suggest I figure that out ?

It depends on the area. If there are lifeguards you might ask them. If not then you need to be careful but look for surfers who have approximately your skills and go there or take some lessons if that is available and the instructor will guide you.
