I been a couple years since I've got back into the water to surf properly.
Before I was surfing mostly up in Kaitaia, north of Auckland, in New Zealand and was catching some really nice green waves there (especially
with fish swimming in the surf). Locals there are so friendly and laid-back.
Now I'm based in Gold Coast, Australia and I'm starting all over again~
I started off with a 7'6 mal but have since switched to a 7'2 funboard. I can paddle out to the back several times with no problems and occasionally ride a green wave but I'm sticking mostly to the white-wash to pop-up and practice turning to boost up my confidence levels.
I'm lucky I have a more experienced surfer buddy here. It's nice to get tips and know there's someone looking out for me. A big thank you to all those other surfers out on the water looking after novice friends like me.
I've heard about the surf rage that happens in Gold Coast but the local surfers I've been out in the water with have been nothing but chilled-out and pleasant. I think it's important to know and practice the surf etiquette, respect the locals, and you'll get the respect back. =)
