Canyon Surfboards

Postby jayperace » Thu May 18, 2006 3:01 pm

Does anyone have any info about Canyon Surfboards? I've located one website that claims to have some in stock. Apparently they are made in China. Canyon was started by Rusty himself, but he left them in 1985 I think. I'd like to know who's manufacturing and selling the Canyon label.

Hey tomcat360, can you confirm the manufacturer of the Canyon Surfboard your friend bought?

No, sorry. He doesn't know a whole lot about the board, other than he got it off ebay.

And he has "FCS" fins, but they are boxes....

I have a 6'10'' Canyon and from what I've found out through research, Rusty did leave Canyon in the 80s but they still use most of his original designs and are built to specs. The only difference is they are made in China. Seems like a decent board for my first so far.

A few years back Costo brought back the Canyon label and sold a bunch of them, they buy the rigths to a lable every few years. Not sure who bought the new rights to the label.

It's like wallmark carrying OB boardshorts, made my heart sink...

Just wanted to provide some accurate info...

Canyon Surfboards was started and owned by John Durward, who shaped boards under the name "Juan Grande". He could also be heard providing the surf report for SanDiego's 91X in the '80s and '90s. I'm not sure of the business relationship, but Rusty worked at Canyon with/for John. With his early success shaping boards for the likes of Wes Laine, Shaun Tomson, and darn near any other pro surfer, he struck out on his own with his R. label.

John continued to shape Canyon Surfboards (and I owned a few). Eventually he had to close up the shop in O.B. and later passed away.

I've heard the Canyon name had been resurrected by a Chinese manufacturer, with no consideration to John's family. If this is the case, please do not purchase a Canyon surfboard. I know they would be inexpensive and probably of a good quality, but his family deserves some consideration for the name that he built. I'm sure you would hope for the same.
