Greenough 4A in Christenson C-Bucket/Flat Tracker?

Postby TeeBee89 » Tue Jul 26, 2022 12:31 pm

Good Day All,
Has anyone ever run a Greenough 4A (or similar wide base flex fin) in either a Christensen C-Bucket or Flat Tracker?
My understanding via Realwater is these boards work better with smaller fins relative to their size.
Example: 7'6 board = 7-7.5 size fin, no bigger. However, noticed people tended to suggest narrower, stiffer fins.
Very curious what others think. Likewise, if anyone has run a 4A in a CI Mid, or if that style of board is more suitable for a flex fin.
Thanks!!

Yikes, guess this was too "niche."
If anyone has advice/feedback on using a Greenough 4A in mid-lengths like the CI Mid, be happy to hear it.
Looking especially for reqs on sizing the fin (7 or 8?) for a mid-length between 7'6 to 8'0, for a 5'11 180 no longer 30ish intermediate surfer that has been out of the water for three years, looking at knee to no bigger than head high beachies as conditions I'm most likely to surf.
Might be too niche again, but I had a lot of good sessions with a Fineline Egg at 7'4 with 8" Greenough 4A and 4A volan clone and thought similar size would work in 7'6 to 8'0
Anyways thanks and cheers!

Where do you set the 8" Greenough A4 in the center box of your 7'4" ? In the middle, front or back of the box ?

Thanks!
First the middle.
Fineline Brian suggested it was best place to start, but was adamant that moving it around even a little bit front or back, say even just a half inch would make a huge difference.
So I went with that, a little bit forward on small days and little back on bigger days.
I experimented a few times with jamming it all the way forward on smaller days, as I thought it would make the board better at trimming and given its kind of hullish character, I could turn and trim it from the middle of the board.
Took awhile and I brought it back a little at a time on those days, but I eventually found the sweet spot. Really loved that trimming speed and the mid board turning, almost stepping on the gas to make it go faster as you step forward.
Anxious to find another board and 4A combo to get that back.
Sorry that was a lot, what's your experience been?

So where is that "sweet spot" to set the fin in the center box on the 7'4" using a 8" Greenough A4 that you yourself found?

Could dig up a picture, but I'd stress that "spot" worked for me, that board, that 4A fin (not the volan one), and between about knee to just waist high conditions at a beachie. Worked less well at knee, better between thigh to waist.
Eyeballing an old pic of the fin box, I think it was 2 inches back from far forward. No more than 3.

On my 7'4 egg with tail width about 15 1/2", I really liked the 8" 4A about 1/4" back of center.

I had a 7'6 fineline egg too and liked the 9" L-Flex instead.

Nice!
Always meant to try an L-Flex, but was never sure of the sizing.
9" wasn't too much fin?
Found 8" was about right for 7'4.

L-Flex isn't too small -- it has a small base and tip, and 9" is the standard size for sub 7 foot hulls to 7'+.

Thanks! I suspected that given the narrow base and whippy looking tip, but was never sure.
What made you prefer the L-Flex in a 7'6 egg vs. the 7'4?

I have 4a fins from 7” to 9.75”. My favorite fin so Ingot one in each size except 8.5”. I usually do one inch per foot if under head high and add an inch if overhead (8’ board/9” fin). I used to mive fins around alot but now just do a thumb width back from center usually. Have a 7’2” deus rounded pin tracker type board that I last used a 8” 4a in and went fine.

Jeez thanks Geezer, that's some really useful math I'll try to remember for 4A sizing!
How do you find the 7'2 Deus tracker btw? Their boards are pricey, look spiffy, but never really heard how they go?

Good board….classic shape, fun slidy convex bottom contours, solid glassing, fairly light. Got it in a size that fits me and in my favorite color. :)
