thunderbolt boards

Postby southcoastofGB » Tue Jul 27, 2021 2:48 pm

does anyone have experience with the thunderbolt tech, i am especially interested in the thunderbolt 'RED' , the xeon fiberglass layup.

weight and durability compared to the firewire timbertek and other epoxy tech like the surftech tuflite boards.

as a side note does anyone have experience with the skindog 9'2 wrangler(https://www.secretspot.co.uk/surfboards/boards/skindog-surfboards-wrangler-thunderbolt-red-9ft-2__4119) or 9'1 peacemaker (https://www.secretspot.co.uk/surfboards/boards/skindog-surfboards-peacemaker-thunderbolt-black-blue__6750)

I am currently comparing these myself..want something for mainly trying to turn in these sort of conditions -

that is my home break that i surf 90% of the time...and those waves are about the upper limit of what i will use a longboard for...any bigger than thigh/waist and i would be on a shorter board

I'm a bit late with my reply, i fear.
I have a thunderbolt red mid 6. I was super sucked in by the feather weight and promise of high strength.
It lasted 3 surfs and snapped across the fin boxes in 3ft cornish. The laminate had very poor bonding to the blank foam layers, which could be easily peeled off. It didn't stand a chance buckling just short of the u shaped glass stringer across the front fins. Just the position if this snap is enough to evidence a problem.
There is no carbon in a red thunderbolt btw.

Avoid ! They are poorly made and badly designed.
But worse is that firewire and supplier (skindog) both looked at the poor construction, concluding it's normal despite any expert seeing it being amazed at poor bonding.
So never buy firewire either.
